Pit Bull Killer Is "Devastated," But Has No Regrets

The man who shot and killed a 4-year-old pit bull on Long Island is speaking out and defending his actions. Yesterday it was reported that Timothy Devine was waiting for his daughter to get home from school (it turns out she's 18-years-old), when he saw the pit bull following a child on a bike. He called 911, but ended up shooting the dog, which he described as being "very agitated," before they arrived.

He has since told Newsday he was "devastated" by the shooting, but has no regrets—"Look, I didn't go looking for this. I got nothing against dogs. If it hadn't been coming after me, I wouldn't have shot it." It was coming for him because he allegedly attempted to distract it from going after a 13-year-old girl who had just gotten off the bus. Her mother noted that the dog had been a concern for a couple of years, and was often tied to a tree and barking.

No charges are expected against Devine, but his actions are under investigation—after he shot the dog it walked home and died on its stoop. Currently the police have been unable to talk to the dog's owners.

Please do some research on the breed. Pit bulls are very people centered and rarely attack people unless the have specifically been trained to to that. (take a look at the owner, that will give you a clue) Since they were misused to fight other dogs, any pits that were agressive towards humans were destroyed. They are great with children and are very protective of the family and stand up to all the abuse children inflict on animals. My pit got run over by some kid on the block who didnt even know how to use brakes and the dog didnt even flinch. I cant even begin to count how many people have jumped away from the dogs while the quietly walk down the street on their leashes.

shit ned! it's heading right for us!

People act like getting rid of the breed is denying god's evolutionary will or something. The breed was created by man. It has violent tendencies because it was bred specifically to fight bulls and bears. I don't blame individual dogs when a child gets attacked. I blame the people that bring the dogs into those situations. You really don't need to have a pitbull in the city. In fact doing so is reckless.

To be clear I'm not advocating getting rid of the breed from Earth, it just doesn't belong near any parks, lots of children it does know, etc. These dogs do have their places, like on ranches, battlefields and of course dog-fights and bull baits.

    Hey y'all,

I didn't comment because I knew the two articles would be a shitshow in the comments section.

I just want to again say that the irrational exterminate the breed stuff is a little out of control, no?

Pitties were the classic american family dog forever (the little rascal's dog was a pit).

My pit (RIP) was fantastic around people. always the charming gentleman, great with kids (i mean, who doesn't like having their belly scritched?) and he once went after a Black bear in the Maine woods to defend me. If a dog is well socialized and kept by responsible owners, then there is no reason to fear that dog.

This was obviously not the case in this situation. The dog had a history of terrorizing the neighborhood, and was chasing a little girl. I understand why homey bucked the pup down. probably the only good option at that point.

But saying all pits should be killed because of a few bad apples is like saying all white people should be killed because of the son of sam/unabomber/jeffrey dahmer etc. fucking illogical, reactionary, and stupid.

i would say think outside of the media sheeple, but that cxb guy or whoever he was really kind of ruined that for everyone.

I certainly dont blame the breed. it is all about how the dog is raised and the environment that it is placed in. The house that the dog was at is anything but an acceptable place for an animal...or a human to live. they never showed a full picture of the house. i dont have anything against pit bulls honestly, they are beautiful dogs.

Also the reason no one can get in touch with the owners is because he went out of state for the week....leaving the dog with someone who obviously did not take proper care of him.

Be careful of them and I hope the authorities really prosecute them and prevent them from every having any dogs or other animals.

  • youngpro

so you support devine for shooting the dog but you hate the owner?

HI I AM TIMOTHY DEVINE'S 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, don't wanna believe me? then thats ur problem. i'm not going to give my name because i am sick of these articles. to "Christine Quinn's Slush Fund" you were not there, nor have u been around the house where the dog is. it HAS gone after people and i have a neighborhood to completely back me up on that, the owner has been warned. THE OWNER has been in and out of jail FOR YEARS, for drugs and alcohol related issues. His brother who also resides with him is a registered sex offender. See the stupid media leaves this shit out, they exploit what they want then people like u judge based on what u hear rather then what you care to know. I WAS THERE WHEN THIS HAPPENED, believe me this was not easy for me and not at all my father. my dad does not hunt and is not a killer. he has a registered gun, he does not just "walk around with a gun" (to who ever made that comment) especially since this was at our house. Also since the dog went after him on our own property it was COMPLETELY justifiable and legal, as the cops and detectives have said. Hence there being no arrest. he did not want to shoot the dog, he did not have a choice when the dog went after him. what would u have done? let the dog go to town on your damn body? do u know how much force a pit bull has when it bites down on you? if not research it. my dad called the suffolk county police twice, once to warn them and get them over there ASAP....but they took over 15 min to show up, and a second time to let them know what he had done. the police showed up too late to do anything about restraining the dog. other wise my dad would not have fired.

Also can you make sure your neighborhood doesn't blame the breed but the fault lies on these a**holes with such an extensive criminal background. Please ask them not to overreact and try to punish the breed but the people who abused the dogs. The pitbull is a victim as well. They probably didn't care about him which is why he running loose around the neighborhood. It is quite sad that the poor dog walk back to his home to die.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    Tim

Thanks a lot. And it is a shame that those people did that to the dog. They do belong in jail. Drive them out of that neighborhood. I still have doubts that the pit was dangerous but the fact that he was tied to the tree was a sign of abuse. Most people who have backyard dogs don't have the as companions but as tool for security or lawn ornaments.

Nothing personal against your dad but I hate all the abuse on pits. I am glad that he doesn't hunt because that is cowardly

    Thanks for sharing.

    Felix

i support you and your dad 100%.

  • dadoc

Agreed, but you know what this place is like.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

you and youngpro should like to throw insults and criticism at others' posting and remarks on this blog when you should look in the mirror. both of you are ultimate trolls

  • dadoc

If you are who you state, please do not be upset about many of the replies which will likely come shortly. If you are new here, please step back, and don't engage certain people who enjoy taunting and abusing other humans. There was a bad situation and a man made a judgment call, no kids hurt. Not trying to shut you down, but PLEASE take time in your responses, and browse back through previous animal-related threads. There are those here who are not reasonable (or even sane), and will pounce on your post in an attempt to inflict further emotional damage on all involved.

  • Petey

The man with his LEGAL firearm protected the children and people of his neighborhood from a dog which he deemed a threat to the physical safety of those same people. If the dog was properly restrained by the owner, this never would have happened. At least no people were hurt....(Waiting for PETA to cry about the dogs rights)
