Cyclist Hit by Express Bus in Union Square

[UPDATE BELOW] This is the scene from what looks to be a serious collision between a cyclist and a bus in Union Square about 4 p.m. today. One tipster whose office overlooks the scene writes:

I swear I'm not a news vigilante but.... about 10 minutes ago, in my office just above this intersection, we heard a very loud crunch followed but MANY screams. Looks like a cyclist got run over in the middle of the intersection by the MTA bus that parks right outside 853 Broadway. Bike was completely missing the front wheel in the aftermath.

Thank God, the girl who got hit had a helmet on and is conscious—we've seen her moving her arm around as they loaded her into the stretcher. Meds had to cut off her clothes so the cops had sheets up from there on. Looks like her leg or hip got run over, lots of blood. Ugh. VERY prompt response by police and ambulance though.

Another tipster writes that it was a male cyclist struck, and that there was "no clean up of blood that was all over the street, they just opened back up traffic.... gross." We'll update when/if we get more details from the NYPD and MTA.

UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: A NYC Transit spokesperson tells us, "Details are under investigation but we have been told that at approximately 4 p.m. this afternoon, an X1 express bus came in contact with a cyclist on Broadway between 13th & 14th St. We understand the cyclist was knocked clear of the bus and removed to an area hospital with what appear to be non life-threatening injuries."

Union Square is horrible. Also, those Express Buses drive like maniacs. I'm not saying the cyclist was in the clear necessarily, but stand on the corner of 14th and Broadway for 1 hour during rush hour and I guarantee you will see at least one huge bus blow through the intersection on a red light.

As a regular cyclist, Union Square is a dangerous place to ride. I avoid it at all costs.

This is my niece who got hit by the bus and according to the Police Report, the bus went through the red light. She has so much to live for. Last Monday she gave her exam for her PhD and was looking forward to.

Please pray for her, the doctors are trying to save her leg.

  • wow 14th street

in 47 years on 14th street I have seen many fatal accidents

usually hit & run, I can't think of not wanting to help

    someone you hurt.

I hope this woman pulls through alright and I would plead

to those who said they were witnesses to go to the local

police precinct and ID yourself and tell them what you

    saw.

Can't help but notice he is not crushed in a "bike lane" the city spent millions to build yet they are rarely used. THe bike lanes have further increased conjestion, so if you ride in the city, use the lanes. Otherwise you might end up like the poor chap

    1. Where she's lying in the photo is unlikely to be where she was actually hit.

    2. That stretch of Broadway between 13th and 15th doesn't have a bike lane. (Nor does the rest of Broadway through Noho, for that matter.)

    3. That particular intersection is a nightmare of bike, pedestrian, and vehicle traffic regardless of whether or not a bike lane were in place.

Who thought it was a great idea to route all these bus lines through here?

  • xgeyiph772

If not Broadway, where are they supposed to go? Is there a safer street in Manhattan with no bikes or peds? Buses have been traveling down Broadway for over 80 years now, and trolleys and horsecars for 100 years before that. Bikes have been around NYC for over 100 years also, but mostly in parks or other designated areas. These tragic accidents are occuring more frequently because, for better or worse, there are more bikers using city streets. NYC is a scary place for bikes as they move very quick and can be hard to see. It's just sad.

    Try 10-15 tons...not 3.

  • Rodrigo

Hi. My name is Rodrigo Ortiz and the biker is my sister, Pilar. Injuries are non life-threatening, but very life-changing as we still don't know if the leg can be saved. She's a PhD student who had just earned a scholarship, of whom we are all very proud. Anyhow, I'm posting to ask if anyone has any clear information regarding the accident, or anyone who may have witnessed it. I live in Chile (as does most of Pilar's family), but my family's going to be in NYC and will be looking into the police report (which was filed). evil_galactor@yahoo.com

    Thank you.

Hello Rodrigo i was there and saw what happened :( i feel really sorry for your sister and wish her the best of luck. I cant tell you who had right of way but i was sitting in the park across the street and heard what had happen. The bus didnt stop and kept going from what i had seen. It looked like the bus had the Light while her direction was red. But i ran to her and called 911. they came in a matter of seconds to her aid. thats all i can say i dont wanna talk about the images i saw for they are very sad to discuss i just send my prays out to her and hope she will recover from this. i hope this little information can help you and the NYPD with the investigation.

    Hello Rodrigo:

I am so sorry for your sister. I walked by the accident scene yesterday. I would ask employees in nearby stores about what they saw yesterday. The street vendors may also have something to tell, as they see a lot of things.

Like with many New Yorkers, your sister and your family are in my thoughts.

  • drewo

Good luck Rodrigo, and all the best to your sister in her recovery.

You may discover that it is very difficult to assign blame to auto drivers in New York City as the NYPD rarely does any significant follow-up work to these types of incidents; what the NYPD blithely calls an "accident" is often something closer to gross negligence and/or assault.

  • LESh8r

i am so sorry Rodrigo. your family is in my thoughts.

  • WorksInDUMBO

this is horrible. Thank goodness she survived.

My best to the cyclist and her family.

Lets stop blaming the victim here folks. I saw the entire thing from the dining area at Whole Foods. The bus driver ran a red light, hit the biker and kept going. I find it hard to believe that he didn't hear anything given the mangled condition of the bike. He was wrong and should be thrown in jail. Period. As for the bastards at the MTA who seem to thing a mangled leg is non life threatening they should be fired, then run over by a bus on the way to the unemployment office. I'll drive.
