Authorities Take Down Bloods, Latin Kings In Newburgh

2010_05_fbiraid.jpg Hundreds of officers and agents from local, state, and federal agencies, led by the FBI, conducted early morning raids in Newburgh, NY today, in an attempt to address the outsized violence in the small city. The Times Herald-Record reports there were two operations: "Blood Drive" which "targeted 60 suspected members of the Bloods, including the reputed leader Anthony 'Double O' Boykins and his 18-year-old replacement, Joseph McLean" and "Black Crown," which "targeted 18 members of the Latin Kings." Federal indictments are expected later this afternoon. WABC 7 reports, "The Bloods will be brought to Lower Manhattan, and the Latin Kings will be brought to White Plains."

    Lock 'em all up.

Association with these gangs should be enough to justify a long prison term, let alone any actual crimes they may have committed.

    Fuck this trash.

Newburgh - they wanna be like Compton.

I live across the river in Beacon and driving through Newburgh is incredible. It's like what you see in movies and TV. It's hard to believe how much of a shithole it is.

I'm conflicted. Good job that they've cleaned up some of the criminal activity in Newberg. But, it will leave a power vacuum and someone else will step in to take up the slack. Simply arresting the known offenders doesn't stop the drug use and general crime in an impoverished area.

What has the state done to try and curb the trend of kids in the area joining gangs? Is there an after-school program to be put in place - a community center?

    Tactical nuke?

    Latrine duty in Iraq?

    Oil cleanup in the Gulf?

Happy news story out of my home-away-from-home in Tucson, where 4 gang members took a bunch of bullets from a shop owner on Tuesday. One dead, three shot and arrested. The owner suffered minor injuries.

Armed shop owner, worker thwarted heist; 4 men ID'd

Good job by the FBI. Get these waste of humans sent to prison for life without parole.

Wow....the NYT does an article about crime in Newburgh and suddenly the full force of the government sweeps in. Hundreds of officers?

  • Petey

whenever the police do these large scale drug raids, its something that they've been working on for anywhere from a few months to a few years.

The article may have made them make the jump earlier than they would have liked, but it was in the works.

  • jaycjay

More likely, someone at the NY Times got wind of the investigation and so thought it would be a good time to write a story about Newburgh before the raids happened.

It's unlikely that this kind of operation would be put together and carried out in the 24 hours since the story was published.

  • Clarice City

The article in the Times today said that the investigation had been underway for the past six months or so already.

  • bagelman

yea, i was thinking the same thing. too bad krugman editorials don't lead to that type of action.

  • JacqueMehoff

darn, I was just dismissed from Fed jury duty this week.

  • Clarice City

Good. Newburgh is a total shithole because of the garbage that has taken up residence there. If these clowns wanted to be tough and carry a gun why don't they join the Army? Because they're lazy and total pussies.

    operation blood drive...

    I LOVE IT!

i'd say i want to be the guy who comes up with sting operation names for law enforcement agencies, but he/she is already doing a bang up job.

  • drewo

Gangs: men who enjoy gathering in secret, following dress codes, and codes of conduct and passwords, etc.

Sounds like homoerotic behavior to me. But that's not a bad thing though! (the homoerotic part...)
