A 43-year-old man in Setauket shot and killed a 4-year-old pit bull he claims was terrorizing children, reports Newsday. Timothy Devine called 911 on Tuesday afternoon alerting officials to a pit bull chasing people in the area just as kids were about to come home from school. Ten minutes later he called back saying he killed the dog, who was allegedly chasing a girl who had just gotten off the bus. Devine owns a registered handgun, and he told police he "attracted the dog toward him and away from one girl who was a particular target." After being shot, the dog walked back to his own home, where he died on the front steps. No charges have been filed.

R.I.P. dog. Rip the owner a new one for letting the dog run around without a leash.

  • Even the dog is epic. He could manage to get in the front door. Wonder what kind of power does the dog have.... will power maybe?

  • nycblahg

why couldn't he have at least put the dog out of its misery instead of letting it walk home injured and die on it's stoop? how cruel and unnecessary. the poor dog was probably neglected, untrained, and uncared for its whole life, and at the end it got him killed--in a heartless way. is this the best we can do for "man's best friend"?

Buffalo Bill thinks he can take the law into his own hands. Another reason guns should be illegal.

Bunch of Republican nazis. That's why the mob rules this city. Everyone has some thug in their neighborhood they can go to when they want someone taken care of. Continue to praise violence Republicans, your time is short.

awful....I used to be afraid of pits due to the owners making them vicious. Especially in the hood I grew up in. But, it wasn't till I have my own pit now and been in dog-parks with responsible owners of pits and other breeds to show that, most of the time, a dog goes chasing because it wants to play. and PITS, looooove to run and play. If the dog wanted to bite someone, it already would have. It was prolly just nervous or wanted to play. Shooting the dog was NOT a good idea. That asshole! As well as the owners, just as much are assholes.

lets hope that this happens to more of these useless, viscous animals

    ban the pitbull!

    Nice work, bud.

If I have any sympathy for the dog, it's that it suffered long enough to make it home.

    Can its owner be cited?

  • youngpro

interesting- i just watched the news and it seems to contradict this entirely, namely:

-the dog had at least one DOCUMENTED incidence of violence in the past

-the dog was NOT attracted, but witness say it actually went to attack the shooter, who then was chased and retaliated with a shot

-the little girl feared for her life and screamed

-other neighbors claim the dog was 'moody' and often terrorized the people (not just kids) of the neighborhood....

    So suck on that, philip

A rope with a brass hook tied to a tree lay in the dog owner's front yard. No one answered the door Wednesday and no answered a phone number listed there. Police said a neighbor reported a year ago that a "vicious" pit bull was loose; officers returned it to the home with a warning to the owner.

Brookhaven Town officials said they could not reach the animal control division to check on any other complaints about the dog.

    Glad it's dead.

why was this poor dog running loose?

Did the owners have so little awareness about owning a dog that let the creature unattended running free?

    That is TOTALLY irresponsible.

I blame both, the owners and the gun owner for "thinking" that shooting first and then asking questions a solution to anything, specially the responsibility lying in the owners. Same level of idiocy! Terrible story!

humans are so damn irresponsible, the more power the less responsibility, it seems is the case !

    This thread is madness!!!

  • MrManhattan

At least it was a Lawn Guylander who did this, so we can't blame the humans.

  • inoyourider

All fault on the dog owner.

  • youngpro

this story sounds like it was posted by george costanza. waits until the end of the day to say something incendiary, makes a lotta uproar with comments (almost 100 within just TWO hours), then leaves for the day without anyone noticing.

'that's all! you've been great! i'm outta here!'

  • dadoc

Shooter perceived threat to others, called cops.

Threat continued (to children) before arrival of cops.

Shooter drew threat away from kids, threat approached to five foot range.

    Single shot, threat neutralized.

"Trigger happy" would be more like NOT calling the cops, chasing the dog and firing multiple times.

Sounds to me like he used his best judgment at the time.

    Good shoot, no problem.

  • Again, if the pitbull wanted to rip someone's face off, it would have way before it was shot.

  • Dead Himmler

Animals are UNPREDICTABLE. Especially these violent breeds. Please try not to be so arrogant and pretend to know this monsters ultimate intentions. If it was up to me I would purge the whole breed tomorrow. This is a good start.

  • MrManhattan

I agree, all Lawn Guylanders should be put down.
