David Cameron Is The New British PM

2010_05_davidcam.jpg David Cameron, the 43-year-old Conservative, became the new prime minister of Britain after Gordon Brown announced his resignation earlier today. The Conservative party won 306 seats, but 325 were needed to win— Brown's Labour party won 258—so the Conservative have been in talks with the Lib Dem party for its 57 seats. Cameron told the public today that he would "help build a more responsible society here in Britain... Those who can should and those who can't, we will always help. I want to make sure that my government always looks after the elderly, the frail, the poorest in our country." Mayor Bloomberg's office Tweeted congratulations and "NYers wish you the best!"

    bad news for UK.

Why exactly? My impression is that the last 13 years of Labour rule hasn't exactly gone over well with the general populace. It's pretty hard to find more than a handful of people in London who don't despise Brown...am I missing something?

Pretty much, but Cameron ain't that much of a step up. Honestly, Labour should be happy about being the opposition party now. Cameron will no doubt have to start cutting spending everywhere, defense, NHS & Social programs to get the budget back to somewhat sustainable levels. Such talk of cuts were muted by ALL parties during the campaign.

Agreed. I remember reading a few weeks back some were saying that whichever party wins this election will be out at the next election and not be able to return to power for a full generation--specifically because of the severity of the spending cuts the UK must make to reign in their Greek-like budget deficit.

All 3 parties were lying during the election because no one wanted to be the "bad guy" who cut spending and raised taxes. Ironic considering that the prize for winning is that you will be the bad guy who will have to implement all these cuts.

But the Lib Dems scared the hell out of me with their talk of raising capital gains taxes to 50%. Terrible idea. Hopefully the coalition will scrap that, but who knows--all 3 parties seem determined to drive companies out of the UK. We all know Asia is where the growth is and will be there eventually--50% tax rates on income and capital gains will just speed up death of the West....

    Speak for yourself, Mike!

The Camerons are a lot more photogenic than the Browns, at least. As for government, we shall see.

Quick edit - the Conservative Party (Cameron's) is the same as the Tory party. Brown's party is the Labour party.

  • theboneranger

a lot of british people seem unhappy about this

  • PKMKII

maybe because the conservatives only got 36% of the vote

  • callo282

Also, maybe some of us have bad memories of living in England the last time that the Tory party was in power.
