Video: Obama Says Xbox Makes You Dumb

In his commencement speech to students at Hampton University, President Obama warned that the Xbox and the iPads are melting the minds of American youths. The charming president opened with killer material about Mother's Day and the area sports team, earning the graduates' trust before hitting them with the harsh reality of technology. He said, “With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations—none of which I know how to work—information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation." He also warned against trusting the blogs, on which "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction." Be careful, Obama; the Facebook can giveth and the Facebook can taketh away.

So what will save us from the dangers of social media? Obama says a good education is "what has always allowed us to meet the challenges of a changing world." It's also what can earn you the money to get out there and actually buy an iPad. You can watch the whole speech below...courtesy of YouTube.

Blogs can be use to spread lies? That friggin' Kenyan Bildeberger Commie Islamofacist doesn't know what the hell he's talking about!

  • napalm

Seem like no matter the issue, Americans (white) will always resent president Obama because regardless, he is black. But our previous numbskull president Bush, got tons more support from Americans (white) even though he was an evil jibberish speaking illiterate who started two wars and is responsible for thousands of dead service men and women, but regardless he is white. We supported him

ALL THOSE ENDLESS DRINKING NIGHTS OF BASHING BUSH...

ALL THOSE HIGH-FIVES AT THE VOTING DAY...

ALL THOSE ENDLESS CHANTS OF SHOUTING "OBAMA" AND DRINKING AND DANCING AND SINGING ON THE NIGHT HE WON...

ok, i'll get back to you. gonna make a bunch of angry phone calls. it could take a while.

ps i'm not even that politically motivated. i just went with the flow.

  • napalm

Wow, that's a lot of anger you got there. So far we got, you hate blacks and Kenyans, and you hate muslims. Before you start rambling about bilderberg, Illuminati ect ect, educate yourself about it, or atleast be able to educate others who may not know of.. Besides, the only thing "I" hate that ends with "Berg", starts with "Bloom"

eh, i don't think he was being all that serious, but cool name. reminds me of this: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning... The smell, you know that gasoline smell... Smells like, victory."

    oh... priceless. priceless. just. priceless.

funny we're reading this on gothamist.

  • Thespis

He doesn't know how to use an iPod? What an odd thing to say -- for one thing, he gave one to the Queen of England as a gift. And a quick search turns up an interview with Rolling Stone where Obama lists what's on his...iPod.

It was obviously just a rhetorical flourish, and I'm sure he didn't mean for it to become a news story -- but what a really strange thing to say.

  • napalm

Well his point was directed at kids, he's an adult.

  • Thespis

I'm not disagreeing with his point. I just find it odd that he'd claim not to be able to use a device that he clearly knows how to use. Obviously just a rhetorical flourish -- but an odd one.

  • I agree with Obama: books really went downhill with the advent of "fiction." These "novels" are ruining our kids attention spans, & are just a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment. Someone needs to take a stand or else this will be ruined, just like "poems" ruined oratory back in the day!

"With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations—none of which I know how to work—information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment..."

    hahahahaha

i'm sorry, mr. president. i'm your fan. but those things don't make people dumb. entertainment makes people learn better; a little fun here and there makes it easy for information to enter and stay in our brains. now which information is more useful than others... that is what you're probably really after.
