Legal Marijuana Knock-off "K2" Could Be Outlawed

051010k2.jpg We're only just hearing about this "K2" drug today, and already it's about to be made illegal! The synthetic herb is legally sold in New York as incense; when smoked K2 creates a high similar to marijuana, but without the calming effect. Symptoms can include anxiety, panic, paranoia, rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. Party! But Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice wants Albany to outlaw it.

Rice is proposing a statewide ban on the synthesized cannabinoids which are added to the K2 herbal mixture, which is marketed under several different names, or "blends," such as Summit, Citron, Blonde, Pink, Spice and Pineapple Express. According to the DA, ingredients include: canavalia rosea, clematis vitalba, nelumbo nucifera, pedicularis grand folia, heimia salicifolia, leonurus sibiricus, ledum palustre, blue lotus, baybean and a number of other herbs. Because the chemical compounds that give K2 smokers a high are slightly different from THC, they are not covered by existing drug laws.

A group of Long Island lawmakers have already proposed criminalizing K2, but their bill would makes the offense only a business violation, imposing a $500 fine on any business caught selling the herb. Rice says that doesn't go far enough, and she wants to add the synthetic marijuana compounds to the list of Controlled Substances, which would also make it a penalty to use K2 or possess it. "Anyone who buys and inhales these unregulated substances is putting themselves at serious risk," Rice tells Newsday.

I love the whole "Putting themselves at risk" comment on the bottom of this. Every day, I go to work. (I have to go so I can pay my bills) I drive there; and put myself "at risk" of getting in an accident- 50/50 odds on whose fault it would be; mine or someone elses. I am also mechanic at a factory, so I put myself "at risk" many; many times a day there--again, a 50/50 chance on whose fault, mine or the companys. ( Again, I have to go there so I can buy food for my family and gas,). Then, I come home in the afternoon and as soon as I walk into my house, I am yet again; "at risk"--of fire, flood, earthquake, radon, carbon monoxide, etc. (But I have to go there to be with my family) The point is, I believe very strongly that the government should allow it's people to decide what "Risks" they are going to take, especially since we are a Democracy; and all of these politicians who are going against this should worry about what's going on in their own homes and their own lives instead of trying to push their opinions onto everyone else. You can't force someone to be, act or do the same as you; or to make the same decisions you would. But where do you get the right to choose for someone else? If that is the case then there are several decisions I would like to have the deciding vote on... oh, and I just reread this thing and realized that all the "side effects" listed are the same ones you get from drinking too much coffee, and we all know how much money we spend on Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Tim Hortons; which are 3 major "drug" dealers, since caffeine is highly addictive; and as far as the whole" people who buy and inhale this drug are putting themselves at serious risk" comment, well, you don't have to buy the air in California right now, it's free; but if you breathe it, you might just be "AT RISK"!!!!!

  • cigarettes are legal alcohol is legal those kill alot more people a year than this would guaranteed

I most definitely feel there should be age restrictions, as there are, with tobacco and alcohol products, but really, what do they hope to accomplish by banning these substances? These guys claim to have k2 incense products that are legal in every single state, http://www.k2-incense.com/what-is so you see, these bans aren't so effective are they?

It's nerve-wracking how some people are so ban happy. It should be crystal clear by now that prohibition just doesn't work. Well, for anyone but the black market drug peddlers, that is. They are having a field day with this k2 incense stuff. Apparently there is loads of counterfeit floating about already. This site even offers rewards for reporting it. http://www.buyk2incense.com. FDA regulation doesn't mean much to me as they are constantly approving toxins for human consumption. Go research some of the ingredients in your extremely processed "food".

it's pretty lame..when our local govt seems to think that they should take all our rights..if we are adults this needs to be our decision, the federal govt hadn't banned it for a reason.. so now they make it so i can't go to the store on my street and buy k2, can't support my local economy. and i'm not going to support my local dealer, that money just goes to mexico. so i'll buy online and get it in my mail from places like www.fastaroma.com or www.k2herbalincensesmoke.com, or the dozen other websites out there, safer then going across state lines.

don't believe anything this Ginger screecher says.

I'm glad others are seeing her true colors.

"Symptoms can include anxiety, panic, paranoia, rapid heart rate and shortness of breath."

So it's like marijuana, which causes "increased rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia," increases the heart rate and could cause heart attacks, and users of which have "many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers."

That's according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is probably also the source of the K2 information. Both descriptions should be taken equally as seriously.

This K2 doesn't sound very fun at all, but it couldn't be worse then salvia.

  • Salvia isn't that bad when done correctly and/or with an experienced guide.

"Anyone who buys and inhales these unregulated substances is putting themselves at serious risk"

This is true of a wide range of possibly carcinogenic food additives, industrial chemicals, and of course tobacco, but oh no, this one is sort of like pot

  • grizzzly

Seriously, that shit has it's own enforcement mechanism built in

  • Bike Rider

are we sure it isn't just salvia? that shit is a nightmare in a nug

  • dirty hipster

No idea - but after my salvia experience i refuse to buy anything from headshops that isn't made of glass.

How are bankers and stockbrokers supposed to hurt millions of people through their actions if they aren't thinking clearly because they're hurting only themselves (if that) with a plant?

Sorry, just making sure we have our law-enforcement priorities straight.

  • drewo

As long as you buy your drugs from one drug dealer - Big Pharma - it's OK!

(just be sure to read the long list of side effects)

  • ANGRYGOD11

This brings up the fact synthetic drugs will be created faster than laws to regulate them. And in this case, and no doubt in future cases, the newly created drug is worse then the original.

The increasing faster pace of technology makes regulating behavior dumber and tougher.

"Anyone who buys and inhales these unregulated substances is putting themselves at serious risk"

    And... so what? Let them.

Criminalizing one more thing that people now can find, if they want to, legally won't make it go away. It will mean that criminals instead of local business will make money selling it, and because doing so is a crime they will be willing to use violence to protect their own interests.

Basically, Nassau County's DA is proposing a way to increase the amount of violent crime in the state, and to further enrich drug dealers and gangs.

  • really!?!?

While you are at it, can you get rid of Peter King as well, Thanks LI
