Last Night's Action: Sweeps Averted

  • Boston 9 Yankees 3: With Sergio Mitre pitching tomorrow and Javier Vazquez on Tuesday, the Yankees really needed AJ Burnett to get them deep into Sunday’s game. Burnett absolutely failed as he got shellacked for nine runs in four and one-third innings to take his first loss of the season. Romulo Sanchez came in and stopped the bleeding with 3-2/3’s innings of scoreless relief, but he will probably be rewarded with a trip back to the minors for a replacement arm. All in all, the Yankees will take another series win and they head to Detroit for four games with old friend Johnny Damon and the Tigers.

  • San Francisco 6 Mets 5: Oliver Perez was terrible and the Mets fell behind early to the NL’s best, Tim Lincecum 4-0. But, they battled back and took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Mets’ bullpen couldn’t hold it and the Giants took a 6-5 lead into the ninth. And when Jason Bay led off the ninth with a double it seemed like another walkoff win was in the making. Unfortunately it was not to be David Wright was called out on strikes and ejected, Ike Davis was punched out as well and Jeff Francoeur went down swinging to end the game.
