BMW Brand Manager Fined For UWS Bomb Scare

051001bmw.jpg The owner of a prototype BMW that was left parked and running under a tarp on Central Park West and triggered a bomb scare yesterday was issued a summons for idling his vehicle. Martin Birkmann, a BMW brand manager, had mistakenly left the oddly designed X3 prototype running while he and his girlfriend had a picnic in the park. The car apparently runs so silently that he didn't even notice.

Cops swarmed the area and shut down 77th through 81st streets as they tried to assess whether or not the SUV posed any threats, and even considered evacuating the nearby American Museum of Natural History. Both the exterior and interior of the car were covered in tarps, and one NYPD bomb technician had to smash through the back window to check inside, but determined there was no threat upon interviewing Birkmann. The "threat" was initially called in by a woman who was walking her dog in the area, and is one of many suspicious package reports in the wake of the Times Square bomb scare.

so he got fired for getting BMW more free global publicity for that car than their production cars get for paid advertising?

  • Joseph

So let me get this straight. We now call the cops every time we see an unoccupied vehicle idling??? So now if I remote start my car it could be seen as a terrorist act if I do it in NYC? Get a grip you people.

Fine the women for calling the bomb squad not the car owner.

Hey, dog-walking woman, here's a little tip. If somebody is trying to bomb a spot, he's not going to use a really, really conspicuous car with strange markings all over it. The operative phrase would be "low profile."

Given how stupid the times square bomber was its not out of the realm of possibility

Didnt BMW make the ovens that were used in the concentration camps?

BMWs suck. Mercedes is much better.

Actually, a company named J.A. Topf and Sons (Industrial oven and chimney company established in 1878) assisted in the building of most of the crematoriums. BMW was too busy making motorcycles and airplane engines for the government at the time.

Kane is right, if past Nazi involvement in a company is a problem for you, I suggest you check out your beloved Mercedes and their ties to the third Reich.

And I hope you don't wear Hugo Boss either.

Let's not forget that Volkswagen was Hitler's little project. And Ferdinand Porsche designed it at his request.

And if you really want to shun the Axis powers, don't forget the other ocean. Among other companies, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (makers of an awful lot of NYC subway cars) and Mitsubishi did a great job of building armaments for the Imperial forces. Remember the infamous Zero fighter plane?

Or that IBM supplied the data systems that allowed the Nazis to analyze census data to find and track Jewish residence, the Asprin company Bayer made the toxic gas for the gas chambers, Siemen's made the actual gas chambers, the current Pope was affiliated with the Nazis...

And to add to your point, I'm pretty sure Sharp made radios for the Japanese military as well.

In any case, if "Nazis!" is how you determine who doesn't get your business, you've got a few companies to sift through. And you can't buy cars from Germany, period.

  • jpeditor

Lets not forget Joe Kennedy discouraging FDR from assisting Churchill and the BRits against the Nazis.

  • Car companies aren't really in the business of making crematoria, but when it comes to Jewish slave labor, your beloved Daimler-Benz was a willing recipient.

"was left parked and running under a tarp"

    Nope, that was yesterday's news.

But today, there it turns out there was no tarp covering it (which would have been odd). The WPIX article says the vehicle had white plastic swirls covering its exterior. The

In other words, the way it's shown in the pic above is exactly how it looked while parked.

Not sure where that extra "there" came from. "But today, it turns out..."

hah! that's what you get for getting fancy with html.

note to self: google html. it's now or never.

  • jaycjay

Nah, I've been manually coding html since back when that was the only way to do it. It's what I get for editing my post while talking on the phone.

  • Guest

well, the truth is... i'm an html-phobe.

note to self #2: google, damn you! google!

  • jpeditor

Maybe they confused it with this Volkswagon.

  • Guest

    HOLY SHIT!!!

    that is so wrong...

    Me want that car.
Can't afford it, but me want.
This mistake could be the best piece of advertising for BMW.

    We are retarded.

  • jibbly

It's the UWS, no one cares enough about it to actually go through the trouble of trying to harm it. It's like Tom Cruise: Everyone thinks he's sort of a crazy, xenu-fellatioing douche, but nobody is actively trying to assassinate him.
