Abandoned Truck Left On RFK Bridge

2010_05_uhaul.jpg The NYPD shut down the RFK (aka Triborough) Bridge in both directions last night when they were alerted to a U-Haul truck abandoned on the span. After an investigation—which included the bomb squad—it was determined there was nothing in the truck.

According to WABC 7, "Police say a UHaul truck with Arizona license plates on the Manhattan span of the bridge was found abandoned on the bridge around 10pm. New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said a worker on the bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx found the vehicle apparently smelling of gas."

But by midnight, MyFoxNY reports, "Police officers carefully opened the truck and discovered that it was empty, the NYPD said. Witnesses reported seeing a man flee the vehicle, police said." The police, who cut a hole into the side of the truck to determine it was empty, are taking away the truck for a further examination.

Sorry guys, if someone is suspected in a terroristic threat or suspected to be involved in terrorism, it's no skin on my back if the constitutional rights of OUR country are stripped from them regardless of the fact that they might have a citizenship or not.

If you are living in America legally, are a citizen, and you are trying to PURPOSELY END AMERICAN LIVES THROUGH THE ACT OF TERRORISM, regardless of your nationality or skin color, I. DO. NOT. CARE. ABOUT. YOUR. RIGHTS. ANYMORE.

Stop being insane liberal freaks. "I'll defend that mans right to be quiet because this is AMERICA!!!!"

  • TheTruth

The right to abandon a U-Haul on an interstate highway is an inherent right granted to all US citizens. We can't trample on this man's freedom.

  • theLtrain

Let me remind you freaks that if this was a story about some black kid in one of our many ghettos killing an old woman, or a child somewhere, you'd all be on your high horses demanding he be BURNED ALIVE FOR ALL TO SEE, not defending his right to due process or...well any of his rights at all...

    So fuck all of you.

  • theLtrain

Yeah, even if it wasn't terrorism related this is an incredibly stupid thing to do in NYC (ESPECIALLY in the climate after the times sq incident) and if they knew who left the truck he should not have a right to keep his mouth shut.

  • potsmoker

    test run?

how about calling uhaul and getting the renter info and contact #...

  • RoboticInsides

Have you guys seen Falling Down? Maybe the driver got fed up and just abandoned the truck. Some Bronx gangstas are getting a beat down as we speak.

Was D-FENS supposed to be a hero in that movie? Because he was a psycho.

  • Politburo

To me it's always been unclear if D-Fens is supposed to be an antihero or a tragic hero.

  • Dwayne Hoover

@L train. That "right" is based upon the 5th and 6th Amendments of the US Constitution.

Ever hear of it? Or are you too busy jerking off to a running loop of John McCain singing 'bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iran'?

  • theLtrain

They're testing reactions and response patterns.

Bad news is if whoever left this truck there is a US citizen he's going to be kindly told he has a "right to remain silent" and extraction of vital information would be impossible...and all you insane human rights nuts defend this practice...

  • SP

"all you insane human rights nuts defend this practice..."

So that is what you think of this country's laws and traditions? What is it about the US that you love then? Seems to me that you actually hate American values. If you consider human rights to be "nuts" then why don't you go live in Iran, North Korea or Uganda? You would be much happier over there apparently.

If Miranda didn't exist that would not mean that suspects would be forced to give accurate information.

This is commonly overlooked by the t0rture crowd.

  • Mr. Shankly

His first statement is the more worrisome of the two, if accurate.

  • Politburo

I tend to think that's more movie stuff.. Why do a test run when all it does is increase your exposure? I'll note that the 9/11 hijackers, who did do a fair amount of planning, did not do a "test run", per se. Yes, they did plenty of flying and would have been able to make observations, but they didn't probe the system like what OP is suggesting.

  • Mr. Shankly

Agreed, based on the current appearance of AlQaeda's fragmented leadership and recent bungled attempts.

Leadership of a well-run organization probably wouldn't risk much exposure sending out low level pawns to map the minefield.

There hasn't been evidence that it is well run, at this point anyway.

Call me paranoid, but the consistently low-level failures of these attempts seems diversionary. And yes I have been watching too many movies.

Anywhoo, this abandoned truck is likely unrelated and was abandoned by some college student because of a mechanical issue.

  • ohhleary

You know how much of a nut you are? Even Glenn Beck disagrees with you.

  • jlocke

You piece of shit. This is an essential American right.

  • TheKlaus

Why are the Arizona license plates noteworthy? When's the last time you saw a U-Haul in NYC with New York plates?

  • Stevennnn

Most U-Hauls I see usually always have AZ plates.

  • longacre

Yep, the company is based in Phoenix.
