Hipsters: Now Time Traveling To The 1940s

phpOBdrToPM.jpg

The above photo comes with a caption which reads: “Reopening of the South Fork Bridge after flood in Nov. 1940. 1941 (?)” The photo is believed to be real and unaltered, and can be found at the virtual Bralorne Pioneer Museum. So, what is that modern-day looking hipster with the fancy camera and sunglasses doing in the 1940s? Clearly, we have a time traveler on our hands.

Not so fast. FreeWilliamsburg supplies us with a giant buzzkill today, providing a link to this site, which is doing its damnedest to prove this guy didn't travel from current day Williamsburg to 1940s Canada. In the end, however, even they're skeptical of their proof. They note, "Pay attention to the right arm of the 'time traveller': you may realize that the arm actually belongs to the man right behind him. Why would another man’s arm be in that position?" Our answer: invisible time traveler. Discuss.

He's wearing mountaineering goggles, a knit sweater, is holding an old folding camera, and is wearing a Montreal Maroons sweatshirt, a team that folded in 1938. This is the Canadian Rockies- he's just a cool local dude who likes to take pictures of mountains. Nothing about him is out of time or place.

  • thefacts

35 mm cameras like he is holding were prohibitively expensive in 1940.

Sun glasss like that were not designed in 1940.

Plus, he is the only one with sunglasses.

Men didn't wear iconic T-shirts or fruity cardigans like that in 1940.

Also, there is a difference in the shading and the contrast between him and everyone else in the photo.

He is ill-positioned VS everyone else in the photo.

Btw, Photoshop is a recent invention.

Are you time traveling? This story was spread around the web weeks ago.

  • BERT

    EXACTLY!

felt like this made the internet rounds, like, a month ago...

  • jaycjay

Just today I saw a guy wearing a fedora just like the one that guy in the front row holding the camera has. I guess he was a time traveler from 940.

  • jaycjay

Er... right, 940. I meant to type that. He was originally from 940, but stopped in at 1940 to buy a new hat before coming to 2010.

  • Kojak

Somebody tell Skynet to send back the T1000 to take these Hipsters out.

Fuck Sarah Conner. This is a top priority.

there is nothing out of place with that photo except your perception of that era.

there are no clothing, or objects that wouldnt have existed then.

Just a guy with unkept hair and big sunglasses. I've got tons of old photos where the people look like they could have walked off Bedford Ave today.

Thats the point of looking at the past and old photos of your parents and their parents. You realize, they were just like us. Exactly like us. And where are they now?

Live it up while you can. times tide and all that jazz.

  • Blue387

I speculate someone probably hacked into the museum website and replaced the original with a photoshopped one with the "time traveller".

  • kazubes

not enough animal abuse to report on today Jen?

  • youngpro

after today, and the fucking octopus story, ive lost faith. im boycotting reading or posting to any carlson/animal articles since theyre just meant to drive viewer/readership up, especially knowing those numbers will skyrocket once felix and friends hit the threads.

  • yamon

If I could time travel, I'd do my darndest not to attend the "Reopening of the South Fork Bridge" that's one lame hipster

  • youngpro

he's wearing a screen-print tee; screen printing wasnt even around then. it's fake- simple.

  • jaycjay

Looks to me like a knit sweater with the design woven into it. Like a classic college sweater from 1940.

  • jaycjay

Or like this 1940s ski sweater. Probably the kind of thing that wouldn't be uncommon in the Canadian Rockies at the time:

i don't think it's the arm of the man behind him. i think he's just wearing a vest that appears to be a sweater.
