Would You Order Live Octopus?

Last month PETA announced their distaste for restaurants serving live octopus. They wrote letters, protested, and are currently investigating the issue throughout the city. For now, the twitching dish is still being served up, and the Daily News just sent one brave writer to sink his teeth into it.

Daniel Edward Rosen headed to a PETA target in Flushing, called Sik Gaek, where he ordered san-nakji—"the tentacles of the nakji, a small octopus native to Korean and Chinese waters, are chopped up and served with garlic and jalapeño peppers." A manager at the restaurant says once it's ordered it is "killed instantly by having its head split open and its brain removed. The octopus is then immediately chopped up and served to a customer" (while nerve activity keeps it moving). Here's a look at another way of preparing and eating san-nakji.

The writhing dish latches its suction cups to everything (chopsticks, the roof of your mouth, etc), but Rosen concludes it was a "surprisingly palatable experience, especially when dipped in chojang, a hot pepper sauce. Some of the pieces were gelatinous and disgusting, while the tougher pieces—after much chewing—went down easily." In the end, however, he declares that he prefers his future meals to be fully cooked.

y'know, i just realized that calling south korea (where my parents are from) a third-world country doesn't make me feel bad at all. it's just a simple misunderstanding of facts: "korea is a third-world country" is like saying "mexico is a south american country."

did i have bad feelings towards those real third-world countries? i must have, yet i no longer do, at all. i'm sure real third-world countries have enough problems of their own and they'd probably appreciate it if people didn't use the term as a curse phrase. anyways, here's the actual list of third-world countries designated by the u.n., and they're all beautiful:

Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso,

Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad,

Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Djibouti,

Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau,

Haiti, Kiribati, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia,

Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar,

Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone,

Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Republic

of Tanzania, Vanuatu, Yemen and Zambia.

    1. I am a current resident in Seoul, S.Korea and live octopus is considered a delicacy.

    2. PETA needs to stick with being concerned about fur.

    3. Yeah, the 8 legged little guy can feel his tentacles being chopped off, but really...who cares...that's like saying fishing is cruel. It's in our hunter-gatherer nature. Live or cooked it's gonna die sometime and end up in somebody else's tummy. That's what happens when your on the bottom of the food chain.

wow. something i don't even know about, and i'm korean!

just out of curiosity, what do you do when you search for a country? "what is the very worst thing i can find out about this country i don't like?" instead of looking at the best possible features and wondering what are some good points, you look for the worst possible things that even most koreans aren't even aware of?

no, unlike you, i'm not going to post the worst possible examples about latin countries. i'm sure you are aware of them, but i tend to look for what is pleasant and ignore what is not pleasant.

the more you keep posting shitty stuff, the more you will lose any respect even from the ones who used to think you're ok.

ps i still haven't seen you cursing out france for foie gras. "do you not see what i'm not talking about?" (hahaha)

oh, and i think france is a beautiful country, just like korea, just like any other countries including the latin ones.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

jeez, again i am not looking for the best and worst in any country. the story was about how these restaurants (Korean) are steaming octopus alive as a delicacy which is cruel. You have not denounced this cruel practice but keep focusing on my latinos. I am not going to put out mine to compare with yours. That is not the point of the issue. It is the cruelty and it seems that Korea and some Asian countries actually think the food taste better when the animal suffers greatly. This is the point which NOT once have you denounced so please don't take about respect. you have none.

just ignore the above comment. it's really not worth it, at all.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Savages, so eating a living being as it agonizes in pain is a delicacy? what a 3rd world country

  • hazeleyes8

Dear: Christine Quinn's Slush Fund, get with it, Korea is not a 3rd world country. The fact that you keep saying this makes me want to hit you in the face with a live octopus!

  • ridgeside

I know land ownership is a foreign concept to you, but just because someone doesn't live in a city, does not mean they live in a trailer, you can say whatever you want, but the truth is, is that I was right, you are that same douche bag animal saver and that you are felix's bitch. Also you might find this nauseating, but my wife has a vagina, something you will never have.

  • Guest

hey, just wanted to let you know that these two are one and the same guy. this scumbag couldn't even bring himself to label france a third-world country, what with their "third world" practice of preparing foie gras and all, and my guess is b/c his dying wish is to be with a white woman, and if he calls france a third-world country then he'd start to think that he's totally doomed.

he's gonna try in vain to reply with something incredibly stupid, as he always does.

and his very own stupidity is the only reason why he's trying to "save" all the animals--their brains are on the same wavelength as his.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

My dying wish is to be with a white woman, No i don't think so but perhaps it is a korean woman dying wish to be with a white man than with your little dick

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

sorry actually Korean Woman love the dark meat but i don't go for the moon pies.
