Parkchester Residents Fear Rise in Hate Crimes

050310parkchester.jpg The Bengali community in Parkchester, Bronx are worried they're being targeted in hate crimes, with many reporting being robbed or attacked in the past few months. It's gotten so bad that local Moussa Drammeh called a meeting to express concerns to the NYPD and the Bronx DA's office, who informed residents that they had to come forward when the attacks happened. Business owner Zakir Khan told NY1, "That they'll say I'm ashamed or that whoever is attacking us they will come after us again." Officials say more investigation is needed to determine whether the attacks can be classified as hate crimes, just as they did in the recent Staten Island attacks.

Getting robbed is not a hate crime, it's what happens when you're soft and living in the ghetto. Grant it, Parkchester isn't the toughest neighborhood in the BX but you will get stuck up. One must always remember in situations like this you're dealing with the ghetto mentality, there is no reasoning.

If this is true, its a real shame. For the most part the Bengali section of the neighborhood is quite, clean, and graffiti free. Its funny, I was just walking through Starling Ave. about a half hour ago coming back from Planet Fitness admiring their strip of Parkchester.

According to the article, it's break-ins to their homes they are talking about. While that's terrible, maybe, just maybe, the perpetrators are more interested in their possessions than their ethnicity. With no description of the perps, I'm inclined to believe they are black. If they were white, it would have been headline news.
