Overtime Costing MTA a Fortune

050310timecard.jpg Overtime is the latest culprit in the the continuing list of stuff that's costing the MTA a boatload, with employees of the LIRR taking the most home. According to data on SeeThoroughNY, some employees were earning $100,000 to $200,000 over their base salaries in overtime. For example, Michael P. Castro earned $156,252 over his $72,100 salary as a senior analyst. The MTA's inspector general is looking into the LIRR's overtime rules, saying in a statement, "Our focus is on continuing to attack our cost structure to find reductions across our agencies including reducing overtime across the MTA." Similar problems have been troubling the Port Authority, which reported $15 million more in income spending last year. A million here, a million there, and pretty soon you're talking real money!

Lets not forget the MTA selling its land to developers who don't have the highest bid. (Atlantic Yards). When will people realize the MTA needs a complete overhaul of its operations and organization?

  • Stevennnn

Then the MTA has the audacity to complain they have no money and let just fu*k the public with more fare hikes.

Please educate yourself about the whole situation before making a comment. These people work hard and deserve that money. And if you want better service perhaps they should get paid even more. It's all about supply and demand. Capitalism 101.

  • RightNYer

Capitalism and the principles of supply and demand include government protection for labor unions who monopolize labor and therefore pervert the free market? Please do some research before you embarrass yourself any further.

And honestly, if the man is working THAT much, shouldn't they just hire someone else and cap everyone's overtime? Productivity would soar and compensation costs would plummet.

  • Kojak

    In practice, yes, you're correct.

But to earn double your salary in overtime alone? Something is not right. And given the recent massive fraud concerning disability pensions on the LIRR in which over 95% took advantage of, it's reasonable to suspect this may be another sign of employees working the system.

If I pulled down those numbers in OT, Senior Management investigate immediately.

Just raise the fares and cut service. Why fuck up a good thing?

Really?? 3 different links across 4 words?

If they work overtime then they should be paid overtime otherwise 8 hours and home.

  • boogpowell

I disagree. They should have to actually do work for 8 hours a day and then beyond that be paid overtime. these people sit on their ass doing nothing for 8 hours a day then start doing work once the overtime clock starts. i can easily go to work and do nothing for 8 hours and then say i didnt have enough time to finish and stay late. the only difference is i have a boss who cares and if i dont do my work they can tell. these mta guys have no supervision and just slack off so they have OT opportunitys

Unreal. I thought only whites from Wall St. were responsible for the recession.

Quarter mil salary, union protection, not having to do shit on the job..... sounds like a dream come true, where do I sign up?
