New Yorkers, Mets Continue to Protest Arizona

New Yorkers are continuing to band together against Arizona's immigration bill. One Queens church held a vigil, with attendees hoping for everything from violence to salvation to befall Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who signed the bill into law on April 23rd. “I would like to pray with her, to change her heart,” one undocumented worker told the Times. Others weren't as sympathetic, with a few dressing up like devils and one man suggesting he'd like to punch Brewer. However, not everybody has been jumping on the Arizona-bashing bandwagon.

Andrea Peyser of the Post claims her illegal nanny, for whom she paid taxes, is in favor of the new immigration laws. "They just want to take from this beautiful country," she said. "They don't want to work. They want to commit crimes or whatever." Newsday reports (subscription required) Rep. Peter King has also called the attacks on Arizona "self-righteous," and says the law is "similar to what the federal government should be doing." After being named the House GOP chairman of the National Security Solutions Group, he said, "It's easy for us sitting thousands of miles away. The only problem we're going to have in New York is too-crowded neighborhoods, maybe some extra crime, whatever, assuming the worst."

Despite their criticism, New Yorkers have been showing their support for illegal immigrants. The City Bar Justice Center said in a press release that they believe the bill is an "unfair, unjust law that will cause great hardship to many people regardless of their immigration status," and want the ABA/NLADA Equal Justice Conference to be moved from Phoenix, otherwise they won't attend. CUNY has launched a program aimed at getting Mexican immigrants (and presumably immigrants of other ethnic groups) working in the restaurant industry to go back to school, even if they are undocumented.

Baseball players are even getting into the debate, as nearly 28% of MLB players are of Hispanic origin. Chicago Cubs fans boycotted a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, and New York Mets catcher Rod Barajas said, “If they happen to pull someone over who looks like they are of Latin descent, even if they are a U.S. citizen, that is the first question that is going to be asked. But if a blond-haired, blue-eyed Canadian gets pulled over, do you think they are going to ask for their papers? No."

O noes, somebody's enforcing the laws, get them in the FEMA camps quick! (LOL) Progressive's will sure have egg on their face when the dust settles, and I'll bet the Jewish people are less than thrilled with them now. So by all means let's play boycott!

Ewwwheeeeee! I do loves me some Harper Valley PTA games! First the California hypocrites (remember don't boycott us over gay marriage?), then children of the Colorado homephobes, those para-military whacko's in Idaho, and now the state that's tainted two elections starts wagging it's finger.....soooooo much fun! Since a small few from each state are speaking up to represent everyone in it as they shake their hypocrite fingers at the citizens of Arizona, I'm striking back! *giggles* Anyone boycotting Arizona (or encouraging it) gets put on my lifelong boycott against b.s. list, say hello to Colorado and Jane Fonda, longtime veterans of my boycott (LOL) Oh, and California, it's awwwwwwwn! Coachella Festival's been one hot mess for years, your wines aren't that good, and I'm sooooooo sick of the yearly pilgrimage to Gay Pride.

    Smooches,

Gay Urban Hipsters In Seattle That Won't Ever Forget This B.S.

those who boycott Arizona, go there and live you'll see the nanny and Arizona's stance are correct.

Even the cactus are sneaking in illegally.

Honestly, who doesn't just want to commit crimes or whatever?

Really, Rod? You believe that a blond-haired, blue-eye Canadian won't be asked for identification??? When "pulled over", isn't that the first thing that every officer asks for in NY, AZ, and every other state? Its called a driver's license, a form of ID that allows individuals to drive on the roads. If they can't produce a driver's license, then the officer has reason to believe they might be in the country without permission.

Also, using the phrase "show me your papers" is a 'truthers', 'birthers', Joy Bahar-esque B.S. Its called identification, and they won't be gassing anyone!

When he says "papers," he's talking about proof of citizenship, visa, permanent resident status, etc., not identification. I doubt many of us carry them all the time. I don't carry my passport around as a matter of course. And he's right that the Canadian would not be asked for such papers.

It's actually fairly easy to get a driver's license without having any of the proof mentioned above. If you have a job, like Peyser's nanny did, you can have an employee's ID, pay stub and check cashing card. That's three points toward a driver's license right there. Add in a Social Security card that's easy to fake, especially with the databases of dead people easily available from many sources, and you're pretty much there.

" I doubt many of us carry them all the time. I don't carry my passport around as a matter of course.

You aren't required by FEDERAL LAW to carry your passport unless you are leaving the country via a port.

    NON-CITIZENS ARE.

    http://www.uscis.gov

"A green card is issued to all permanent residents as proof that they are authorized to live and work in the United States. If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid green card in your possession at all times"

"And he's right that the Canadian would not be asked for such papers."

He;s an idiot using reverse racism as a crappy argument.

ANYONE AND EVERYONE who is stopped for "reasonable cause is asked for ID" - from a traffic violation to suspicion of a real crime.

The FIRST thing the cops ask for is your ID.

If you are an American you show your DL / ID. If you are an alien (term of law) you show your green card / visitors visa.

GOT NOTHING? You are going to be further examined.

The ONLY reason people are pushing for amnesty is to ensure Dem majority for decades.

  • Spirit of 76

Again, it's not that hard for an illegal to get a driver's license. But if you look at the law as it's written, they can do anything you want if they "suspect" you. Chances are a white person won't be suspected while some unfortunate legal immigrant who speaks English badly will most definitely get stopped time and again.

And why are you conflating the amnesty issue with this? Nobody said anything about amnesty. It speaks volumes about your xenophobia that you instantly bring this up.

  • jpeditor

"Again, it's not that hard for an illegal to get a driver's license."

Thanks for making the point that illegals are breaking the law getting a license because they are doing it with forged ID.

" But if you look at the law as it's written, they can do anything you want if they "suspect" you."

No they can't, try reading the law.

    (here's a summary: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/opinion/29kobach.html )

They can only ask about your citizenship if they have stopped you for reasonable cause.

"Chances are a white person won't be suspected while some unfortunate legal immigrant who speaks English badly will most definitely get stopped time and again."

"Chances are" isn't how we make law.

    Here file this one way:

    "Anecdote" does NOT equal DATA.

"And why are you conflating the amnesty issue with this? Nobody said anything about amnesty."

It's ALL about amnesty, it's all about "comprehensive immigration reform" which Øbowmao wants to get passed this year before the dems get whipped in Nov so he can have 10 million more voters in 2012. If you don't believe that you must be one of those naive fools who think the Dems don't want "single payer" (or who think the rest of us are too dumb to know thats where the Dems are going).

It speaks volumes about YOUR refusal and your failure to defend our country's right and our obligation to defend our borders, that YOU instantly bring up "xenophobia."

Why don't you just do what the rest of your fellow Øbamunists do who didn't get higher than 480 on their English SATs, and simply cry "RACIST!"?

  • Spirit of 76

Oh, yes, I'm sure people are never stopped for anything but legitimate reasons. That must explain the over 500,000 stop and frisks in NY last year.

You just keep digging that hole deeper, don't you? "Obamao," "Obamunists." A dyed-in-the-wool teabagger if I ever saw one. Not to mention ridiculous statements like bringing up SAT scores. If you only knew. By the way, there's no such thing as "English SATs." It used to be the verbal section, since split into the writing and critical reading sections, and the latter skill obviously eludes you. It is not and has never been called English. I wouldn't brag about your 480 if I were you.

  • jpeditor

"...people are never stopped for anything but legitimate reasons. That must explain the over 500,000 stop and frisks in NY last year.

    OOOH, that racist NYPD!

The NYPD said the breakdown closely mirrored the descriptions of suspects from victims. Rand did not endorse major changes to NYPD tactics. It recommended the NYPD investigate the 15 problem cops...

15 out of how many thousands of cops? You must be one of those morons like Bloomberg who was convinced the Times Square bomber was upset with Obamacare!

"You just keep digging that hole deeper, don't you? "Obamao," "Obamunists." A dyed-in-the-wool teabagger if I ever saw one."

It's Øbowmao, since you are too weak to even copy and paste.

And yes, I support the TEA PARTIES, whereas you and your oh-so-TAHLERANT ilk seem fascinated with slandering patriotic Americans with homosexual calumny while you back the Fraud-in-chief in his attempts to destroy America.

re the SAT score of 480, I was talking about you and your friends. (I scored 650).

But Rahm says "thanks" for trying to avoid the issues. You can meet him in the shower for your personal thank you.

    ...anything they want...

    From sb1070:

For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or agency of this state or a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the united states, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person.

    from Sec 23-212

The attorney general or county attorney shall not investigate complaints that are based solely on race, color or national origin.

Far as I can tell, there's no reason to believe that a canadian and a mexican in identical situations would not receive the same treatment.

  • Spirit of 76

The protest is about the Arizona law, which does, in fact, specify that anyone suspected of being illegal not only could be stopped, but should be stopped and questioned by the police. In that part of the country, if you look Mexican, chances are the police will stop you under that new law.

  • JacqueMehoff

exactly, or a passport or birth certificate.

since most yahoos don't have a passport what other proof of citizenship is there for those born here.

you mean I have to carry around my 20 plus year old certified copy of my BC everywhere? with the raised seal.

  • NYbradES

My point is, the phrase "show me your papers" is a disingenuous terminology meant to instill fear and to subvert honest debate. We are not exterminating people, which is what those who (in every WWII movie) say "show me zese paperz now!!!" were intending to do. The problem is, most people have not looked at the text of the law (google: "text of Arizon's new law", to read). The point is, that since the Federal Govt. was not enforcing its own laws, Arizona decided to protect itself from drug wars that have been pushing over the border and threatening the rights of born-citizens and new citizens alike, who took the law seriously and immigrated by following the proper steps. (And who are now every bit as American as I am)

  • Stevennnn

Checking the dailynews link "Adriana" is undocumented, but being a manager of a Manhattan restaurant. The question is how is she able to be a manager???

  • whitecastlerock

I was asked for papers when I went to Mexico-the police tried to shake me down-now wonder people want to get the fuck out of that place...

  • wingedearth

    deport illegals

  • Time to shut down the Post. With quotes like, "They want to commit crimes or whatever" from a "reporter's" legal nanny is lazy reporting, a lie, and instigatory.

If this is their primary interaction with "illegals" then this paper is only good for its ability to wipe ass. I can't believe it took me this long to realize.
