Failed Times Square Car Bomb Could Be Part Of Int'l Plot

So that apparently poorly constructed, possibly amateurish car bomb left in a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder parked on West 45th Street in Times Square? Now the Washington Post reports it "increasingly appears to have been coordinated by several people in a plot with international links, Obama administration officials said Tuesday. Emerging from a series of briefings, several officials said it was premature to rule out any motive but said the sweeping, multi-state investigation was turning up new clues."

One official told the WaPo, "Don't be surprised if you find a foreign nexus.... They're looking at some tell-tale signs and they're saying it's pointing in that direction." According to the Post, Rep. Peter King (R-Long Island), who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, "said there was no intelligence chatter before or conversation after the car was found -- but warned that that all possibilities must be considered." And Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that all leads are being pursued.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said, "I would say that was intended to terrorize, and I would say that whomever did that would be categorized as a terrorist." The Taliban in Pakistan claimed responsibility for the bomb, but so far officials have said there's no link.

Once you clear all the people in Times Square you just have signs.

Big overly expensive signs. Have at it, just don't hurt people please.

The Brainless MSM entertsainment media now have to generate a spanish or mid eastern look yet everyone ID's a WHITE MALE. Yeah right the punks called repub;licans got punked on this one . A source told CBS News that investigators are looking at a possible suspect, a Pakistani American, in the botched car bombing incident near Times Square. The source said forensic evidence uncovered in the vehicle led them to a Middle Eastern man’s name that was familiar to counter terrorism investigators

  • horseplay

You just had to make sure through that in huh? Listen sir, the current reports still indicate the suspect is 'white'. I know in your world, that would be highly inconceivable, but the suspect is described as a "white male". Think for yourself. Stop being so american

  • jaycjay

To be accurate, the "person of interest" who was seen near the vehicle and later removing his shirt was a white male. No one knows whether he has any connection at all to the bombing attempt other than having been nearby.

If Rolltide's report is true, that would likely be a different person entirely.

  • horseplay

A "white guy" was seen near the SUV, which would have cause possibly dozens, if not hundreds of injuries and deaths. Yet there was what people ID'd as a "white male" seen leaving the seen of this SUV and removing his shirt, but is "only" a "person of interest"?

  • eyekantspel

Anything to say now that they've arrested the Pakistani guy, horseplay?

  • horseplay

Yes, and the day's temperature was pretty hot so someone taking off their shirt wouldn't be so odd. But as usual, people, as well as the media, spread assumptions rather than what's thought to be known (facts). How hard is it to blame Muslims and middle eastern people for everything? Too easy. Bush wasn't a Muslim, and how many lives have been lost and families destroyed because of him? Lets wait for the facts and not use propaganda to satisfy our ignorance.

The only thing we should be concerned about is, no tourists were hurt, and if something does happen, we just need to be concerned about the safety of tourists. Tourists built this city, and they make this city run. Without them, there is no NYC. We should thank God that on 9/11, no tourists were hurt or killed. We need more police officers to protect them

  • jaycjay

What the article actually says: There are some international communications that may or may not be connected to the attempted bombing but "that doesn't get you to an international plot, a multi-organizational plot." There's not currently any hard evidence of a foreign connection of any kind.

Then some guy speculated, based on second-hand information (the "official" quoted above is not directly connected to the investigation, but spoke to people who are) that possibly they might eventually find a "foreign nexus." Maybe. Or maybe not.

  • Gotham Extremist

Its so fuckin easy to nuke NYC its not even funny anymore!

  • dadoc

Of course it was international! It was a Nissan. Alarm clock made in Taiwan. Foreworks made in China. Batteries: Mexican! Probably the only American made component was the fertilizer, likely from Albany. Of course you can't rule out anything yet, Intelligence dolts, that would take millions in fed funds, studies, consultants, cameras, sensors, bribes, graft and beaurocracy. Why don't they just say: "the investigation is continuing". Such BS drama, there's work to be done.

  • openedsource

I don't know, that seems to point to a local. Every New Yorker knows that the best bullshit comes from Albany.

  • kazubes

huh and I was expecting Janet to announce that the system worked again, guess she learned her lesson

  • theevilone

It did work. Our highly trained, counter-terrorism coin purse salesmen came through and foiled this plot.

  • kafkask

These international plots sure aren't what they used to be. Gasoline, some fireworks and a cheap alarm clock?

These people are as dumb as rocks and yet we're losing two wars.

  • jchez

Didn't you hear? AS soon as Bush left Obama took credit for the surge that he said would fail and, bombings and all, Iraq has the only democratic (close enough) government in the Arab world.

  • Mr. Shankly

Or a successful trial run to deliver the real thing later.

  • jaycjay

What would be gained by a "trial run" that does not explode that would not be gained by one that does? Other than leaving behind a lot more evidence, I mean.

There's simply no reason for anyone to have gone through this trouble and risk getting caught simply to see what the response would be before doing it for real.

  • At this point, I have no opinion. THANK YOU GOOD NIGHT!
