Video: American Apparel Under Attack... Again

php8429bmPM.jpg Late last night an American Apparel rep informed us that a group of teenage protesters smashed windows at their flagship store on Broadway this past Saturday. After the group took out two windows there, they moved along and ended up smashing windows at several other stores, including a nearby GNC.

The NYPD managed to track down the teens, making several arrests, but during the chaos an American Apparel employee who was helping them (presumably attired in this very flexible Nylon Spandex Stretch Lace Diamond Grid Bodysuit number) fractured a forearm.

Pictured is a photo of the group in action that the company sent along to us. With so many anarchist attacks on the store lately, this latest by some marketable teen$, we wonder if this is just their new ad campaign. They told us the busted out windows will cost around $3,000 to replace... which has got to be cheaper than a billboard on Houston Street.

But assuming all this nonsense is for real, the latest attack may be explained by this Twitter—which includes a photo of the smashed window. It reads: "Not unrelated to migrant worker rights: smashed american apparel storefront window." (We're told this is the American Apparel's 11th year pushing for immigration reform.) A police report is expected later this week with more on the motive behind the attack.

UPDATE: A group called Defend Capital sent along this video from the scene, where you can see a gent donning bright red sunglasses defend the store by eloquently threatening the protesters, screaming, "I'll fucking kill you all!" They tell us, "we love that store so we decided to chase those punks down and make sure that they got what was coming to them from the cops."

This is such an obvious advertising campaign by american apparel. The whole event in the video looks staged.

  • brandonz

Why are they targeting American Apparel when any other piece of clothing you buy in any other store is obviously made under poorer conditions for lower pay overseas? Target H&M or KMart first...

  • rakhia

commodity showcases destroy our lives and steal our dignity. "if some continue to spin round on a roulette wheel waiting to end up on a lucky number, if some leave their lives to chance, there are others who ambush. we are the carriers of hatred for your world"

How many of these Anarchists are wearing Vans

    or using computers

If American Apparel continues to raise the waist of their jeans and pants, woman will soon be wearing their belts above the boobs. Why? Why? Why? Forget the sweat shops, the Erkel pants are enough to make any good person turn to crime.

  • casper

fuck american apparel. sure, they nominally support 'immigration reform', but they're really just interested in cheap labor. if they really cared about workers, they wouldn't run vile anti-union campaigns and wouldn't have fired those 1,800 workers last year (you know they have enough profit to cover the fines). it's a marketing ploy.

on top of that, their labor practices for store employees are disgusting. in order to get hired, you need proof that you eat, sleep and drink american apparel, that you are willing to be sexually harassed, abused, to defend to the death a rapist capitalist's desire to make money.

i feel sorry for these people. not just because they lead such sad, meaningless lives, but also because they won't be able to set foot in their precious hipster enclaves any time soon.

Is this for employees in production or the sales people in the actual stores? I really don't care about what the sales people who work there have to endure...in fact all retail jobs suck, people should realize that before they take apply.

On May 1, the police arrested 5 persons of seemingly anarchist descent on suspicion of hooliganism after 3 patrons of the SoHo American Apparel bravely responded to a broken window by threatening to "fuck everyone up" and then just calling the cops. We were those brave patrons. This is a call to defend capital.

This is a call to all of my well tanned, gym going, condo owning/leasing brothers and sisters to defend the stores we love from a rising tide of anticapitalism. To all wall street analysts, advertising professionals, celebrities, journalists of a certain caliber, famous chefs, legacies, and confused members of the middle class. Do you want your luxurious lifestyle to go away? Your Gaps and American Apparels? Your iPhones and iPads? Do you want to be equal to the guy who makes your latte?

    No?

    Then Defend Capital!

Cause thats what these anarchist or communist or whatever the fuck they are punks want.

So Defend Capital from gross crust punks that are always ruining my day by asking me for change when I try to hang out on St. Marks. Defend capital from shoplifters and worker sabotage (snitch on your coworkers!). Defend Capital from student protesters, insurgents, taliban, Al qaeda and all the other terrorist assholes on teh news. Defend Capital from its own youth, who've learned to hate it so passionately. But most of all Defend Capital from those who have none.

    uuuuggghhhhhhhhhhh

  • DefendCapital

fuck you hippies. i'll duff you. i'll fucking kill all of you!

  • cuesy

Besides the fact that there are waaay too many of those stores across the city, who really cares? More importantly though, did the guy in the red sunglasses actually "fucking kill" anybody? And has a city-wide, "duff this guy out on sight", call been issued on him?

  • Simple23

american apparel's whole "immigration reform" platform is bullshit, if they really cared about their migrant employees than why wouldn't have halted unionization there. it's just typical liberal "pro-immigrant" "pro-gay" "pro-green" capitalist bullshit. they continue to to exploit their employees, run ads that portray women as inanimate fucktoys, aestheticize apathy, and do it all while putting on a smiley liberal face.

big ups to the May Day black bloc in NY. tear it all down!

  • petebfd

fuck american apparel. their whole sweatshop free shit is just a marketing campaign. fuck dov charney, a sexist, rapist, exploitative, capitalist piece of shit.

anyways, this whole thing reeks of marketing campaign to me. why is it always american apparel that submits these stories? theres even what looks like an american apparel ad in the video...

  • Pachinko

American Apparel advocates and promotes r&pe. Instead of smashing windows with baseball bats, they should be used to ram it up Dov Charney's (CEO/Pres) behind.

  • Mermaid Fornicator

seriously, what is the problem with this company? that they employ americans to produce things her in america instead of importing things from exploited workers in other countries??

  • mingusahum

    Where's the beef?

  • Guest

i quit beef. i switched to lamb. it's better for ya. mutton's good too but it doesn't taste as good.

  • mingusahum

where do you get your lamb from? I was in astoria recently and noticed a glut of awesome looking little greek butchers that seemed ridiculously cheap, though getting to astoria can be a hassle for me...

  • Guest

whole foods, nothing fancy. figured i just need my vitamin B12 from time to time when i crave lamb.

  • Rocknrope

    What is the beef here?

  • moocowtoo

What do these people have against vitamins?

  • casper

i think they like vitamins. apparently american apparel doesn't, since it clearly doesn't allow its poor models to have any :(

  • Guest

they'd never known what it means to be growing up naturally and vitamin-deficient--they were forced to take these evil(*shrug*) pills everyday when they were just little, innocent children... :'(

  • At least it ain't some random local small business?

  • ForrestWhitaker

    Children.
