Crowds Line Up for Shepard Fairey May Day Opening

Shepard Fairey's May Day opening at Detich Projects drew a crowd of locals and celebrities who were fans of the street artist's work. Open through May 29th at 18 Wooster Street, the exhibit coincides with Fairey's pop-up clothing store and his SoHo mural, which may have been painted without a permit. Fairey said of his work, “These people I’m portraying were all revolutionary, in one sense or another. They started out on the margins of culture and ended up changing the mainstream. When we celebrate big steps that were made in the past, it reminds us that big steps can be made in the future.”

Early Twitter reviews of the show seemed positive, with fans raving, "Shepard Fairey's show was amazing tonight!" and "Just left the @obeygiant show at Deitch. Great show. Big (and rambunctious) crowd. Look at the walls peeps. Let's give peace a chance." There was even one guy who decided to stick it to the Man (of the art world): "Couldn't get into the #obeygiant show. So I rolled under the metal barrier. Then put on my sunglasses. Kickin' it old school."

his SOHO mural was not "painted without a permit"

the structure he painted on was built without a permit.

Which one is Fairey? I get so confused when looking at artists, they all look so different than their artwork.

Picture #7 is perfect on about 9 levels. The prick in the Brooks Brothers shirt exemplifies what is wrong with Soho, the "street art" scene, Fairey, and bullshit art openings. Fucking clownshoes.

So fitting that this guy did the Obama posters.
