Census Workers Going Door-to-Door

050210census.jpg They are upon us. Yesterday, thousands of Census workers hit the streets across the country, but don't worry, they won't be turning you in to the feds. Counters face five years in jail and a $250,000 fine if they reveal any of your private information to anyone. "They are really protective of the personal information that is given," one worker told the Daily News. Though workers have been trained on how to deal with aggressive dogs and uncooperative residents, New Yorkers have actually been pretty receptive—at least, those who opened their doors were. The counters will be out and about until July.

I think you only need to answer the number of people living in your home and all the other questions are optional. There are Constitutional limitations on what you can be compelled to answer.

If I've filled out the census already (2 in fact), will they be bothering me too?

  • jaycjay

Yes, and it's your fault. They'll come by to find out why two forms were sent from the same address.

  • Rfive

They were different forms going to different addresses.

my second notice stated if you're already sent in a form, don't send it again.

Census money means more slush fund for Christine Quinn and for her mayoral campaign. Thank goodness the buzzer on my door doesn't work. Thanks slumlord for that. :D

  • Geez if only there was more money & attention being paid to your (apparently under represented) community. If only there was some way to get the funds it deserves. Oh but I guess if you'd rather spite your neighbors, city, state & country in favor of your grudge against Quinn, then you could do that. Priorities straight, definitely.

The money won't come to my district which is why St. Vincent is closed. All the monies will go to Christine Quinn's slush fund.

The questions on race and ethnicity are totally inappropriate. Their only use will be to gerrymander election districts. The fact that the census this year has been taken over from the Dept of Commerce by the White House should tell you that it's become politicized.

  • If think you are deeply confused about who profits from the census. The racial gerrymandering is made possible by an under-reported census. There is a reason rich white scaremongers are spooking people off filling out their forms: the rich white guys are the ones who profit.

If they're still coming around if all that money was spent on those stupid forms?

And it's completely wrong for the government to ask questions about race on a census. It's not their business, and should not be considered when divvying up communal funds.

  • inoyourider

And there's a reason why racial identity is asked on the census- so the government will give areas with high populations of certain races more government funds.

Racial identity should not be used to divvy up PUBLIC funds.

The government's trying to play Peter Pan.

What ever happened to personal responsibility?

  • Pretending race isn't a cultural reality is goofy-- there is a systematized & institutionalized racism, & a legacy of slavery, that inherently messes up how the world works. Sticking your head in the sand to ignore it doesn't make it go away.

Why would I take a job that puts me at risk for 5 years in the clink and a trip to the poorhouse?

  • Uh, because it only does that...if you break the law? I mean, it isn't like they are randomly doing it.
