The Truck America Festival is happening this weekend in the Catskills, and while its the first of its kind in the states, it's been happening for much longer over in the UK. In addition to a full lineup of great live music, there will also be workshops, activities for kids, campfire singalongs, and beautiful weather! Day tickets and full weekend long packages are still available if you want to escape to the mountains for a few days. Here's organizer Robin Bennett to tell you a little more about what to expect up there.
Can you explain the Truck Festival to us? It started 12 years ago when my brother Joe and I (then teenagers) wanted somewhere to play outdoors with our band, inspired by the Woodstock movie, as it happens, and somewhat appalled by the big corporate festivals that dominated the scene. Also inspired by the soundtrack to Convoy: 10 Trucking Greats and the Grateful Dead's Keep on Truckin' slogan.
Why did you choose now to bring it to America? We've always loved American music—The Band, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young (should I say Canadian music?), Mercury Rev, the Jayhawks. We toured here with our former band Goldrush, often staying for months at a time, also backing up Mark Gardener of Ride, and formed a strong bond; Joe even married Claire, who is from New Jersey!
Why the Catskills? See above, there's always been a Woodstock element to Truck! Plus, we are all big Band afficionados (Garth Hudson has played the UK version). We've also recorded at the barn in Bearsville and other area studios. Our friends in Hopewell and Mercury Rev are both area locals and suggested the Full Moon resort.
Have you been up to the venue yet, how would you best describe it? I'm there now! it's a sun-kissed leafy mountain valley with a creek running through at, at this moment (and lots of frantic festival preparation).
What can festival-goers expect? Amazing music, camping, campfire jams and singsongs, 'Holes' by Mercury Rev with a full orchestra, yoga and English Football in the mornings... peace and community in beautiful natural surroundings.
There seems to be a lot going on outside of the music, can you tell us what's happening off-stage? We always like to make our festivals family-friendly; there will be workshops for kids, yoga, soccer, hiking in the woods....
If you return next year, who would be on your ultimate lineup (aside from anyone on it this year)? We're close to it with this lineup! Would be great to bring Levon Helm over from his barnyard to play next time.
Would you ever want to bring the festival closer to NYC? This is a only 2 and a half hour drive—you have to travel that far to get this type of peace and calm—and it can take that long to get through the Holland tunnel on a bad day!
Please share your strangest "only in New York" story. I saw some blog commenters complaining that the festival wasn't in the city.... but that's the WHOLE POINT! Also just witnessed a local radio boss and his promo man arguing about changing the station brand colors from blue and green to red and yelloq—"but that's the color of the San Dego padres!"
Which New Yorker do you most admire? Jay-Z! Musician and mogul!
