A Long Island family suffered two shocks in an hour and a half last weekend when Pennsylvania cops told the Espositos that their son Freddy had been killed...and then that he was actually alive. After a fatal car crash in Pennsylvania killed two Stony Brook University students and injuring a third, a state trooper found Freddy's ID in the crash and informed his parents he had been killed. It turns out he was just asleep at his apartment, and had no idea he had been declared dead.
Freddy Esposito was discovered in bed by his brother and roommate Chris, who came home from his NYPD shift once he heard Freddy had been killed. "I put my hand on his head, thinking it was a pillow, and I jumped," Chris told WCBS. He started shouting "You're dead! You're dead!" to which Freddy replied, "I'm sleeping." Chris immediately called their parents, causing his mother, Geri, to faint for the second time that day. "Ninety minutes of my life I'll never get back," she said. "My husband, who is a very strong man, was reduced to a puddle."
Esposito's ID was found in the hands of his former frat brother 21-year-old Paul Richards, who died during the crash. State Trooper Capt. James Murtin said the ID was a "general match" with Richards, but apologized for the mistake. However, cops have still not contacted the Espositos to discuss the mix up, which happened five days ago.
"I thought even [Wednesday] was a little late. That call should have come on Sunday. I would have taken the call on Wednesday and moved on, but now it's a little late," father Alfred told Newsday (subscription required). The family is also upset for the other families whose sons were killed in the crash. "It's just heartbreaking," said mother Geri. "I don't know them. I can't reach out to them. My son is alive. I am so sorry about your son."
