Chopper Ban Over Brooklyn

After much protest, and some claiming their sound can cause brain damage, the helicopter nightmare over Brooklyn may be coming to an end. According to the Brooklyn Paper the city instituted a no-fly zone over the entire borough today. The move will eliminate 30% of sightseeing helicopters, that often fly over for aerial views of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights, as well as ban them from flying below 1,500 feet. There will be no short tours allowed, and no sightseeing over Brooklyn or the Brooklyn Bridge.

State Senator Daniel Squadron spearheaded the Stop the Chop campaign, and says "this solution was a quick effort to deal with the problem." His help came after an outcry from residents, who claim their calls to 311 weren't being logged, which resulted in difficulty proving the noise was a nuisance.

A group rallying against helicopter noise in NYC adds that there will also be no sight seeing flights allowed over Central Park, or the Empire State Building. They have the full press release which outlines the entire effort as well as the new regulations. Serenity now!

This has always been a problem as far as I'm concerned but more with the traffic and news choppers than with the ones that are on their way to a specific destination. It's one thing to have one fly by it's a whole different thing when there is a helicopter hovering for 10-30 minutes. I'm glad to hear that it will be quieter though.

Then why did I see and hear one earlier today?

  • grandzu

    Again money talks.

  • jaycjay

Yeah, those destitute people who fly in and operate helicopters never had a chance. Can't the little guy win once in a while?

  • MT

So the whiners won, huh? Chalk another one up to coddled Brooklyn complainers. Why do you people even live in one of the largest cities on the planet if you can't take a little noise? If it's so bad go breed elsewhere.

  • justthinkin

Funny that you picked the post name of MT. Sounds like a description of your cranium.

  • fosiacat

says the toughguy transplant who posts on gothamist pretending to be tough as nails.

    who gives a shit.

native here, just because its NYC doesn't mean its a fucking free-for-all and fuck-you-if-you-don't-like-it all the time. its the transplants like you that try to give it the old 'EEEEEEEEYYYYYYY NEW YAWK MOTHAFUCKA' false-persona that hasn't existed since before your investment banker dad and elementary school teaching mom started putting money into your trust fund.

go fuck off back to portland.

  • palesaent

I agree with fosiacat. Just because we live in a major city means we're supposed to accept shitty living conditions (and pay ridiculous rent)simply because it's a major metropolitan city? Why should any city regardless of size/economic wealth have any less respect for it's residents?

On a side note-which Portland are you referring to? I'm a Portland Oregon transplant and sure as fuck don't have a trust fund (I wish!)

  • just saying

Mmm, what was that part again about helicopter noise causing brain damage? I'm beginning to think there might be something to that theory.

  • woodendesigner

I have noticed a lot more stupidity around lately. I think you are on to something here.

  • eveostay

Great, what's your address? I'll be by at 3 tomorrow morning with my grenade launcher.

  • Gregoire

God, those tourist helicopters are the worst! Good riddence. Well done, Mr Squadron.

  • Greenpoint60

This is fantastic, I dont believe it. But the cops will still be flying especially @ night

  • just saying

    but especially during the day.

The cop helicopters really love their joy rides during nice weather. btw-the cops don't necessarily fly more at night. It's just that the noise from the copters is more obvious late at night when everything else is generally quieter.

  • Greenpoint60

Every time Bush came to town they had a chopter over our place all fucking night
