In an attempt to stop being the least healthy place in the state, Bronx officials will be hosting a healthy food summit at Hostos Community College this Saturday. The free summit will feature seminars on healthy eating and composting, fitness games, cooking demonstrations and free lunch! Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz told the Daily News, "The Bronx needs to be healthier...with this food summit we are hoping to accomplish that."
This is just the latest attempt to get Bronx residents eating better. Bloomberg dispatched 79 "Green Carts" to the borough, and City Harvest will use a $175,000 grant from the federal government to distribute fresh produce to some South Bronx projects through its "Mobile Markets" program. According to the county health rankings, the Bronx ranks last at #62 for Health Outcomes, with a 25% obesity rate among adults. Queens was the highest ranking borough, with only a 23% adult obesity rate and only 21% of the population in "poor or fair health." The food summit also hopes to address the problems of hunger and poverty, which are also plaguing the borough.
