Man Killed In Broad Daylight In East Village

2010_04_shooting.jpg Yesterday, around 11:30 a.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the face at Avenue D and East 3rd Street in the East Village. Bahiem Covington was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. A crossing guard, who left the corner for a bathroom break, told the Daily News, "I went inside and heard a shot. When I came out people were running." The News reports that Covington, had "prior arrests for assault and criminal possession of a weapon"; his sister said, "He was a sweet guy... a peacemaker. He wasn't into violence." And according to the Post, police took two men into custody at the scene while two others fled.

I work at the Day Care Center on Avenue D and 4th Street and I asked my coworkers if they heard the shot. No one heard it. Was it a small pistol? I was born and raised in The Lower East Side. I am now 35 and I could tell you that Avenue D has become an area you don't wanna come around to. Sorry to say but it's true. I know we have crackheads every where but shit out

here it's obvious....i blame the youth cause they are the ones who are out here doing what the old school dudes

started. We old school dudes didn't know what we were doing but the there's no excuse for the youth not knowing. I didn't know the man who was killed but my sympathy goes out to his family.

no it wasnt two blocks away. 3rd and D was the intersection of the bb gun sniper

Okay... Violent past most likely is assult... as for whoever said it was comunity service nobody deserves to die and especially not like that... for whoever said a bb gun shooting was at the same intersection no it was about two blocks down... its a good neighborhood its just some of the people who live in the neighborhood are a little wild and crazy but things like this don't happen everyday

Alphabet City was nice for a while. My brother opened up Mama's Food Shop, Step Mamas and Mama Bar and things got better from 99 to 2009 but recently its gone downhill again, so he sold and moved to Italy. Go Figure.

sorry potsmoker but there are a couple thousand kids in williamsburg and bushwick ready to move in once this magical rent decrease happens in the east village.

  • wingedearth

Looks like Avenue D still hasn't emerged from barbarism.

  • ozik

Wow, I was going to write a sarcastic "Ooh it's old NYC" post but I was beat to it by a non-sarcastic poster. Cause, yes, murder is so "street".

  • potsmoker

yeah ave D meant avenue DEAD or DRUGS...

because back in the days yuppies did not dare cross 1st avenue and once on avenue A you were on your own buddy.

hopefully the rents will go back down and all the dummies who gentrified this area will realize that having dudes shot to death outside their door isnt worth the trouble of having mommy subsidize their sex&thecity lifestyle.

Ave D. taking it back to "Dead".

"prior arrests for assault and criminal possession of a weapon" > "He was a sweet guy... a peacemaker. He wasn't into violence."

Remember when Alphabet City was a bad neighboorhood?

What a coincidence ... we've got a crossing guard near my office that takes bathroom breaks too. Usually for hours at a time, hanging out in the lobby of our building.

I'm curious as to when the last time something like this happened in that neighborhood.

  • mason55

There was the shotgun at like 8am at 4th and C a... year?... ago. Plus all the gang killings a little further north. Seems like it's actually been awhile since something happened around there.

This is also the same intersection where people were being shot with a BB gun a few months ago. I never heard if they ever solved that one.

A cashier was stabbed to death at the Key Foods on 4th and Ave A about 2 years ago. I think that was also during the middle of the day as well.

Apparently she had been brushing off the janitor at the store who had been making moves on her. Obviously he was a little deranged and just snapped one day.

  • Yeah, the Key Food murder was two years ago; the killer was a part-time employee who was dating one of the cashiers.
