After 17 Months, Remains Of Missing Woman Found

2009_02_garza.jpg State police have found remains belonging to Laura Garza, last seen at Chelsea nightclub Marquee in December 2008, in a Pennsylvania field. Garza left the club with registered sex offender Michael Mele; WCBS 2 reports, "This past April 11, more than a year later, kids on ATVs found skeletal remains in a field near Olyphant, Pennsylvania. That's one hour west from Mele's apartment." Mele has been in jail for violating his probation related to other sex crimes, but he was never charged for Garza's disappearance, though he was the police's main suspect.

Would anyone care if this girl was not pretty? SO many women go missing without a peep in the media...

  • S.K.

    She looks better than Natalee.

  • and since Mele dumped the body over state lines, it's now a federal crime and the New York State Police can get help from the FBI.

Federal crime? Bring on the death penalty

  • Spirit of 76

Darn shame. Pretty girl with a full life ahead of her. Sort of a young Sandra Bullock thing going on in that picture. One can only hope she didn't suffer.

to remember : don't let your guard down at nightclub Marquee, or any other night club.

  • inoyourider

Hopefully the remains will lead them to the killer.

At the very least it would prevent this from happening again.

  • this is the killer: Michael Mele

  • sexisicilian

I remember her family searching for her in the snow ... may she rest in peace:(

  • snickerdoodle

Glad she was found. Now she and her family can be at peace.

Stories like this proves that sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated. Chemical castration is the only way to fix these losers and make our communities safe from sexual predators once and for all.

  • S.K.

people should still have a right to reproduce. Castrate these offenders, but preserve their sperm. how's that for a Solomonic compromise?

  • theevilone

I hope they can find something useful to prosecute that bastard. The body being out and exposed for a year and a half probably eliminated a lot of useful evidence.

  • She can finally Rest In Peace.

This is such a sad story and one that could have totally been avoided had this man been behind bars from the start. He had all the signs of a violent sex offender and because of the law being so effing lenient, he was able to commit this crime.

  • Stevennnn

And that is why people like him are not scared of the law.

Major kudos to this guy for staying out of jail for this long. But he really has to be shitting a brick now.

  • The best part is, he's not out of jail, he's in jail on an unrelated violation.

  • JenChungsBaby

Isn't this the guy who they found had replaced a large section of his carpeting after she went missing? Wanna bet they'll find the carpet fibers on the body?

  • Yes, the piece of carpet was missing—and then the cops found it bleached and on the highway.

  • Yes. This is the guy (thankfully locked up). I'm sure with modern day forensics they will find a lot more than carpet fibers.

Olyphant is about two and a half hours away from Brooklyn. It's a suburb of Scranton.
