Flashback: New York, July 1960

Just the other day we took a look back at New York City in 1941 and 1942, through the camera lens of Charles W. Cushman. Today we move forward a couple of decades, and visit what he saw in Manhattan in July of 1960. Spoiler alert: everything looks cooler, even the cabs.

I wish I lived in NYC in the '60s!

While this is an interesting post, I somehow suspect that view counter for the article is lying. It's probably counting each and every single view, which would be wrong because anybody who really likes this would be clicking on all of the 14 photographs, adding 14 views even though they're reading the article only once. Yet another MovableType plug-in installed by Gothamist without really considering its usefulness, like the much-hated "receive email notification of further comments."

The lack of graffiti "art" must be heartbreaking for Jake and JDS!

Why not have any Brooklyn or Queens photos? There are other boroughs in this city, ahem.

  • That's true, but it would be impossible to put every year of every borough's history in to one post, no? These photos came from one man's collection, which happened to be Manhattan-based.

Here are some past posts covering other neighborhoods, and there will be future posts that aren't Manhattan-centric. Suggestions always welcome!

There are 8 million stories in the naked city, this is one of them.

that's what this series reminds me of.

    WHOA! the MADMEN era!!

What strikes me is just how similar Lower Manhattan is today. Unlike the building up of Midtown, the histroic heart of the City retains its essential character.

Actually, I was thinking the opposite. The area around Peter Minuit Plaza just in front of the SI Ferry terminal looks absolutely nothing like it does today. An a big chunk of the buildings below City Hall Park, particularly those on Water St, were not there in 1960.

Today's Peter Minuit Plaza is a traffic choke point. Back then, buses had their own area for passenger pick-ups.

  • xgeyiph772

DOT is currently building a circular bus lane in Peter Minuit Plaza very much like the one in the 1960 pic. Everything old is new again!

  • This is great, especially the specificity in the locations & view directions. I can't believe these pictures are only 50 years old!

I love the pic! It reminds me of the good ol days when nyc was nyc. You know, back before nyc was given away to tourist and sold to the billionare boys club.. Ahh, the good ol days

I never understood why people say the 80s was the time they would want to live in NYC.

Most people would have been eaten alive back then

    It was a shithole

This is the glory days of NYC

Even the Bronx was still alive

What strikes me first is the lack of "modern" buildings with mostly glass facades. Cities upstate like Buffalo still look very much like this.

    i love fins!
