PETA Protests Restaurants Serving Live Octopus

Tonight PETA plans to protest some of the restaurants they've called out for serving live animals (HuffPo has a pretty intense video slideshow).

Earlier this month they wrote letters to various District Attorneys concerning the restaurants in their jurisdictions which were plating animals with pulses—some of which were well documented by the Gastronauts club (maybe next time the creatures will steal their cameras!).

But where letter-writing campaigns don't work, maybe picket signs will—they tell us theirs will read: "Octopus Dismembered Alive" and "Animals Steamed Alive," alerting visitors of the cruelty going on in the kitchen. On this evening's agenda: East Seafood Restaurant (150-60 Northern Blvd, Queens) followed by Sik Gaek (161-29 Crocheron Ave, Flushing). Joan Jett urges you to attend!

who cares!?? you must be joking. theyre cool if you kill the sea kitten with a knife but not with hot water? who writes these rules? and to be clear...dude from momofuku was on a tv show eating at this spot...hes not serving it. and for PETA to be as ethnocentric as to impose their own values on (as that episode of no reservations called it) one of the last standing spots in nyc to uphold the true traditions of this culture...speaks volumes on their own ignorance.

if you have an itch to advocate against...its always a safe bet to go with genocide

Why give this group any publicity. Its members are celeberities who eat meat. The whole thing is dumb. To me this is as bad if not worse than reporting on Sarah Palin.

Octopii (octopussies?) are not like lobster, which are basically sea bugs. They are quite intelligent and usually independent beings. While they do taste good, I gotta side with peta about the cooking alive thing. It's totally unecessary for the ownder of momo-fuku to serve it. I mean, does it really add anything? Why not kill the thing with a knife first and serve the tentacles still wriggling? Would that be so bad? Would it affect the "experience"?? No, it would be the exact same thing just not as cruel.

You stupid twat, it's a paraphrase from an old episode of The Young Ones. Regardless, you're a twat.

Can I get extra cruelty with that? Like will they give the octopus a guilt trip first from its mother, then tell it it just won the lottery and then laugh at it because octopi dont play lotto. Then make it watch the Oxygen network for hours...

I think we should pricing food by how intelligent it is. So like 2.99 a lb for chicken, 4.99 a lb for beef, 49.99 a lb for live octopus, 99.99 for human, 89.99 for a stupid human. Smarter ones are harder to kill so it only makes sense!

I like live octopus - tastes kinda like a cross between dolphin and bald eagle.

  • VorneliusCanderbilt

Octupus is WAY less gamey than bald eagle. Now if you wanna compare texture to dolphin, fine... I hear that. Flavor-wise? Gotta go manatee with a hint of panda... Only saltier.

you guys are making me hungry.
