How To Escape New York Without A Car

Hey everyone: Happy Earth Day! We know how you celebrated the other green day this week, but how will you go about giving back to Mother Nature (who seems pretty pissed off right about now)? Jauntsetter has some tips on how to green your travels, with a list of carless escapes from NYC. They note, "Not only are all our destinations green friendly, but they're easy to get to (either by train or bus), to get around (public transport or cabs abound), and on the wallet (eliminating automobiles means mitigating emissions and dollars spent on gasoline)." On their top five: Montreal, Fire Island (no cars allowed!), Philly, Montauk, and Hudson (we suggest trying to catch one of Pete Seeger's sidewalk shows in Beacon—which used to happen every 2nd Saturday around 5 p.m.). Where else?

I feel held back, & I'm suffering financially from what they took from me. Nothing I do or say makes sense to people in society because they don't understand me nor care to understand.

They have no right to do any of this. One of my best friends is OCD and she was the smartest in our graduating class in college. Peoples ignorance makes me so mad sometimes. Just leave.

I know, I wonder if the architects and builders ever looked back and felt bad about what they did.

Surprise they mention Hudson, NY and not a place along Metro-North Hudson Line, which runs much more frequent than Amtrak does eg Beacon, Cold Spring, Poughkeepsie

  • Clarice City

Poughkeepsie is really gross. Not mush there, so I'm not sure why they even mentioned it.

But, I have been on the Metronorth when it makes a special stop on weekends between Cold Spring and Beacon for hikers (breakneck ridge-killer views of the river valley and even the city on a clear day). From there, you can walk to Cold Spring which is a ridiculously cute little village town and get some really good food.

My ride to Cold Spring was only 22 bucks round trip and took about an hour.

Also, I rented a kayak at Hudson Outfitters and kayaked on the river for a day. Nice to get out of the city.

the difference is that from hudson amtrak you can walk through the whole town which has several interesting things. beacon has a couple cool things in walking distance but everything in poughkeepsie is a bit of a hike from the station.

I'm SHOCKED that they mention hudson. It's a 2 hour train ride which'll run an average of about $50 each way on amtrak (off-peak) and aside from a few cute restaurants and antique stores on Warrren street, is otherwise a pretty bleak place.
