Shake Shack's Peanut Butter Bacon Burger: Are You In or Out?

Do you like burgers? How about bacon? Any feelings about peanut butter? If you're already salivating over the thought of those three things married together in the sacred Chapel of Your Divine Mouth Hole, then mark your calendar for THIS Saturday, when Shake Shack will be selling a new Peanut Butter & Bacon Burger for just $5.50. A student reporter for NYUNews was at the Upper West Side Shake Shack last weekend, on the very day that they were experimenting with the item. He writes:

When they say "peanut butter bacon burger," understand that they mean just that — a peanut butter bacon burger, with a big ol' slab of meat slathered in gooey, dripping peanut butter and topped with a few large squares of thick, chewy bacon, all sandwiched between Shake Shack's signature sweet bun. By the time they'd handed me the creation, the peanut butter had already dripped out of it and gotten all over the paper wrap. Hot liquid peanut butter flew everywhere with every bite, covering my hands and face with an uncomfortable stickiness that necessitated licking up because no army of napkins could ever be large enough to wipe up the brown goober goo.

Sounds like heaven, eh? Well, you can secure your ticket to paradise on Saturday—but only at the Upper West Side location. Shake Shack's rep tells us that they never intended to offer it again, but it was such a hit last Saturday, they decided to bring it back for an encore. They have no plans to offer it again after this. Extinction is forever, people.

Peanut butter sandwiches with bacon are nothing new - they were around in the 1950s and 1960s and perhaps before. Adding the burger just takes it to a new level. I say bring it on!

  • Horse Badorties

I like peanut butter and bacon, but I don't think I'd like a burger stuck in there with it.

  • wow 14th street

Pure heart attack and stroke food ,cool.

But who wants to be an old person anyway.

  • NannyState

    Needs jalapeno.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

Why not ditch the bread and wrap the burger between two fried chicken breasts?

  • Greenpoint60

Try some non-salt peanuts, an apple and some OJ instead.

  • sadpanda

Gross. Peanuts without salt. Who are you, Mike Bloomberg?

These are good, I had one in New Haven I think. They are not "artery clogging" any more then a hamburger with cheese. Other interesting burgers to try:

    Burger with Butter on Toast.

Bacon Burger Served on a Krispy Kreme (there is a place in Astoria that does this). Probably artery clogging.

The Vortex in Atlanta actually one-ups this burger with the "Elvis Burger" by putting on PB, bacon, AND fried bananas.

They also have the "Coronary Bypass Burger": A half-lb sirloin with 2 fried eggs, six slices of cheese, eight slices of bacon, generous amounts of mayo on both sides with a grilled cheese sandwich used on both sides instead of buns.

I never tried either, but I saw people eating them, and they were surprisingly not as fat as most people in Georgia.

First of all, I'm in. PB Burgers are awesome.

SECODNLY.... I perfected the peanut butter burger years ago! I should have acted on it and made bank with this brilliant idea.

It's really amazing. Don't hate! Give it a chance! You need spicy mustard or hot sauce on it with sauted mushrooms and onions with cheddar and bacon.

  • Horse Badorties

    Now that sounds good!

  • marblehill

I had one in Gothenburg, Nebraska a few years ago...with cheese. Seriously, this is good stuff. I am IN.

uhm, i quit beef awhile ago, and i don't see how bacon and peanut butter belong together... :-/

  • MrManhattan

I had the exact opposite reaction: My grandmother used to make PB & Bacon sandwiches and they were great, but PB on a burger?

I'm going to try it (probably at home, Shake Shack is just an overpriced In 'n Out, and I get to SF often enough to not need it.)

  • Guest

eh, i just compared pb and bacon since i don't even eat beef anymore.

pb and jelly, maybe. pb and meat, i don't know.

then again, i'm puritanical when it comes to certain types of food, i.e. i almost never mix chocolate with fruit.

    more power to burger lovers.

  • jibbly

In? Out? Yes, I'd like an In-n-Out double double animal style please!

  • Manitoba

I just had diarrhea reading about this.

I don't really love red meat or bacon much, so I am way out on this. I had a Shake Shack burger once just to try it and wasn't so into it anyway. Like the shakes, though, even if they're overpriced.

This should have been a special yesterday (4/20) rather than on Saturday. They could have even sold it for $4.20 and made a killing

  • whitecastlerock

  • katie

    TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY IN!

*sigh.* I'm conflicted. I mean, I owe Gothamist for the notification about this tasty, tasty burger but I'm pissed at Gothamist for posting it because I'll now have to wait longer in line.

  • Stinky Dingo

In. Just never mind the burger -- bacon and peanut butter are delicious together.

  • aa77

since I am deathly allergic to peanuts, this line scares me:

"Hot liquid peanut butter flew everywhere with every bite"

I wonder how they will ensure that the other burgers won't get any peanut butter on 'em when they are cooking / being prepared.

  • aprilnyc

More for you, I'm out, far out.
