Brooklyn Bartenders Save Puppy

cuteoverload0410.jpg Puppies & Bartenders: it's like a calendar waiting to happen! Pawesome reports on a 2 month old pit bull who was saved by a group of bartenders from Brooklyn's Southpaw. Reportedly Alex Darsey found this little guy on a street corner and was told by witnesses that he had been thrown from a car moments earlier :(

He took the pup, named Walter, to an emergency vet clinic and found he was incredibly malnourished, dehydrated and suffering from a severe case of mange. It's also believed the previous owners used harsh chemicals to treat the mange, which only burned Walter's remaining fur and skin. Now Alex and his coworkers behind the bar at Southpaw are pooling their time and money together to make sure their new canine friend recovers.

On a blog they've started to chronicle his progress and raise funds for his recovery, they report back: "His body is like a sponge for bacteria and infection, and he is so weak that he cannot fight it on his own. [But] his white blood cell count is high (which means his body is aggressively trying to fight off the infection), and his general condition has improved since he admitted 2 days ago." Help Save Walter is the new Tip Your Bartender!

FYI: read on walter's blog that The Gate in Park Slope is having a little fundraiser tonite -- all the proceeds from certain taps are going to his recovery. I think I'll try to swing through for a pint or seven (for walter!)

fuck animal abusers, by the way. what kind of person...?

  • sowhtifithppnsitwll

The human( I use it loosely) crap that is.

  • sowhtifithppnsitwll

Too bad the piece of crap did not fall out of the car under the tires. THAT would be good news.

All bars are improved by the presence of a dog. It's a fact.

  • Tricksta

Guess that explains why I see your Mom in there all the time.

"here again an example of people "owning" without any sense of responsibility"

...well of course! you can bet that the dirtbag housing project types who "owned" this dog or it's mother didnt have her fixed, used it to look cool in front of their half-wit dirtbag friends and then couldnt deal with actually having to "do shit" to care for it. they probably havent been cared for themselves with unknown dad in prison etc....it just perpetuates.

You know racism works much better when it isn't cloaked in euphemisms. Just what the fuck is a "housing project type?" Have you ever actually been in a NYC housing project? If not let me clue you in, for every ethnicity that lives in this city is represented in said housing, so there is no "type" that you spoke out your ass of. While I am virulently opposed to animal cruelty, I am just as opposed to close-minded bigots spouting their hate speech.

  • ashlandplace

Wait, if every ethnicity that lives in this city is represented in housing projects, then how is he being racist by labeling the offenders 'housing project types'? If anything I'd say he's being classist (and classless).

I did the same thing about a year and a half ago. I found a small pitbull puppy in the street. He was sick, and malnurished (he was 4 months old, and only weighed 12 pounds). I took him to a vet, and he needed emergency surgery. After $2000, I said to myself "Guess I'm keeping him." I still have him, and I'm happy to say he's in awesome shape. Still very small for a pitbull, but he's healthy, friendly, and everyone in my family loves him.

cute boys caring for injured puppies = swoon.

I can't wait to see this puppy in Gothamist in five years: "Drunken Pit Bull Kills 27 Toddlers in Bar Room Brawl".

  • robingee

I love Toddler Brawls! Especially when they are all sauced up!

that's it, because gothamist couldnt go just ONE day of a non-puppy story, im going home, getting out my puppy launcher, and go ape shit, as i load puppies in it and drive up the fdr. 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 years, doesn't matter the age. if im lucky maybe i'll be able to get an extra 100 points if i get 10 in the east river, and an extra 500 if just one hits and lands on roosevelt island.

  • robingee

Awww, who's a booboo boo? Who's a poopy? YOU are! YOU are!

  • just saying

It looks like someone else needs a rescue.

  • youngpro

wow, i thought gothamist and or carlson could go a day without a fucking animal-related story to rev up site hits and ridiculous felix comments.

here again an example of people "owning" without any sense of responsibility or even a sense of love and compassion. This pattern of cruelty is the reason people procreate to then abuse kids and defenseless pets.

It is fantastic to hear that there are people that can take and love those that are neglected and abused and actually provide the environment for a healthy life for these creatures.

This is about the time of year when everyone who bought cute baby bunnies for their wretched children for Easter are starting to realize it's actually work, and a responsibility, and some will go to shelters and some will be "released" into the wild as if they could even survive out there.
