Laser Pointed Into Cockpit Of JetBlue Plane

2010_04_greenlaser.jpg A JetBlue pilot, preparing to land the plane at JFK Airport, was momentarily blinded by a green laser pointed inside the cockpit. WABC 7 reports, "The plane was approaching JFK over Breezy Point in Queens around 7:45 Saturday night. The pilot told air traffic controllers the green beam was so powerful he had to use a sun visor to block the light. The laser beam appeared to come from the area of the shore and was pointed directly at the cockpit, according to the pilot." Back in 2006, a NJ man who pointed a laser up at a plane and helicopter was arrested under the Patriot Act—people, just use your laser pens on your pets, not on planes!

All you freaking yupsters just don't understand what working people in normal neighborhoods do for fun. They don't HAVE craft beers and overpriced paninis to waste their money on, so they buy lasers.

    WTH is a "normal" neighborhood??

The kind of place where interfering with a pilot at the controls of an airliner is "fun".

It's dickheads like this that get fun stuff made illegal or regulated all to hell. I can't wait for the violet laser pointers!

There are some more powerful lasers (high MW) out there from places like WickedLasers. If the shiner was able to keep the beam steady at the cockpit on an approaching plane probably had it attached to an aimer, like a spotting scope/tele sight. Not a terrorist thing, more like a drunken knucklehead. It being Breezy, DHS should cross-reference the credit card records of city employees at Breezy (the Irish Riviera). Next story: PO Paddy Mc.... arrested.

You don't just walk into a pet store and buy a green laser pointer for $2.99 to play with your cats. Green lasers are much more powerful than red lasers and significantly more expensive so there's a good chance that the person who bought it knew what they were going to do with it or at least what the abilities of a green laser really are.

  • CR

A green laser-pointer will run you about 10-12 bucks online. Not exactly a major expense...

I suppose the deterrence of laws and punishment don't work when faced with stupid people.
