Bloomberg Aide Seeks Out Racist Cabby

taxi041510.png Lolita Jackson, who works in the mayor's Community Affairs office, claims she was rebuffed by a cabby who sped away because she and her friend Segun Akande were black, telling the Post, "It was blatant, outrageous. He drove right up to us, stopped, leaned over the passenger seat to see us, then drove away." Jackson tried remembering the medallion number, but the driver who appeared at the hearing yesterday wasn't the right one, because her driver was "a Sikh. He had a purple turban on," she said. And Akande wondered, "This is New York City 2010. How could this happen to us?" Maybe nothing changes: back in 1999 actor Danny Glover actually filed a formal complaint with the TLC because so many drivers refused to pick him up.

    shes a young republican...

    nice quotes...

"When it comes to voting, she says, "a lot of African-Americans have a herd mentality."

"A lot of very educated African-Americans, unfortunately, have a herd mentality,” she says. “They are probably Republicans in their heart, if you ask them what they believe, but they just can’t vote Republican. They want to believe that Jesse Jackson is going to lead them to the promised land."

How smart do you have to be to breathe?

im more concerned about the cabbie with bad eyesight driving around the city, why would he need to stop and lean over to SEE two black people then drive off..story makes no sense.

im also more concerned about an aunt tom working in the bloomberg administration under some so called community affairs office, gloomberg doesnt care about your community dummy!

    Bloomberg has a black aide?

The "racist" word sure seems to get thrown out rather freely here.

Simply because a cab driver doesn't pick up a black person doesn't make them a racist. They might be stereotyping but that's just life and everyone stereotypes others to some extent. For all we know the cab driver might have a legitimate reason to stereotype. Perhaps they were robbed recently at gunpoint by another black passenger and they're still traumatized.

  • sharpshoota

Exactly... people don't realize how traumatic it can be for these cabbies getting robbed at gunpoint....having fares stiff you in the outer boroughs. Having their cabbie friends get murdered trying to support their families. Changing people's perceptions can only start with a change in our behaviors.

  • grandeur

    UM.....

I had a racist cabby once, "i hate black people, they are less than human" he proceeded to discuss this and give examples of it. i threw him his money then jumped out of his cab.

  • tijuanatornado

To be honest, it seems like a lot BS.

I do agree with the prior comments, there are quite a few racist cabbies, HOWEVER, one of the 1st things you notice of a person is the skin color.

Why go to all the trouble of slowing down, actually stopping and then speed away?

I'm sure he noticed they were black a long time before he even stopped.

  • Mr Mel

There is a way to handle some of these situations. Just get in the

cab and sit down. I know thats impossible if the taxi is rolling, however they may be parked, discharging a passenger or stopped to ask you where you're going. I believe the law is that they must take you where you want to go in the 5 boroughs. Too many people give them the option of letting them refuse you. There are exceptions of course like at the end of a shift, but they are licensed by the city and should follow the rules. It is an entry level job and they do work hard but in most cases they make a reasonable living.

  • valeriob

    Ninja please.

  • sharpshoota

past behavior will dictate how other treat you. Unfortunately, there are innocent folks who get lumped in but...that's life.

  • matty

Even though I more or less can't stand Michael Moore, there was a funny moment in one of his movies where he hails a cab and then does a last minute switch with RUN DMC who tell the cabbie that they want to go to queens.

I didn't lol. But it tickled my funny bone.

  • Spirit of 76

In the first episode of Moore's old TV show, TV Nation, he did a segment with a hidden camera shooting while Yaphet Kotto and a white guy further down the block both tried to flag a cab. Most of the time, the cabs passed right by Kotto and stopped for the white guy. This was after Kotto was already Emmy-nominated for his starring role on Homicide: Life on the Street.

  • Spirit of 76

Now that I think about it, Moore actually made that situation even more ridiculous. The white guy the cabbies usually favored was an ex-con Moore hired. So much for judging a book by its cover -- ex-con versus Emmy-nominated actor.

  • JenChungsBaby

I remember that. The white guy was a convicted murderer.

  • Guest

I don't like MM either, but that's pretty damn funny.
