Signs of Life at Gorilla Coffee

041410gorilla.jpg Four days after the entire staff walked out on Park Slope's Gorilla Coffee, they finally put up a sign explaining their future plans. They write, "Gorilla Coffee will be closed temporarily as we rebuild and restaff this store. We feel committed to open soon out of love for this neighborhood, our regulars and great coffee." The workers walked out after not being able to stand the "perpetually malicious, hostile, and demeaning work environment" anymore. But for anyone in the area willing to endure months of rigorous training, they're hiring! [Via Brownstoner]

As a barista myself, no way I'd ever work there. It must have been beyond awful. Here are my thoughts: http://underemployedinnyc.blogspot.com/2010/04/underemployed-people-fight-for-their.html

I guess they will have to hire some Mexican immigrants that will be all too happy to make lattes. How hard can that be? And those that don't like working at this coffee chain should apply to Starbucks.

Ok, y'know what? It REALLY is enough of this story now. Serioulsy, I understand how some folks might care, might live or work nearby or have an interest in labor issues or whatever, but ENOUGH.

    Here's the thing:

If you're the owner and one person on your staff thinks you're an asshole, it could just be a problem with that person or a personality conflict. No biggie.

When the entire staff thinks you're an asshole and feels strongly enough about it to all quit in this economy, then you truly are a serious asshole.

If the asshole owner is smart, she will have taken a lesson from the huge loss of money due to being closed all this time as well as the cost to get new staff properly trained up.

If not, well I guess we'll have round two shortly.

US unemployment rate is 10%: http://www.google.com/search?q=united+states+unemployment+rate

I think they won't have much problem finding new staff.

People need to work harder and get better jobs than working at a coffee shop.

  • Wish

what, you're going to do it yourself?

Coffee shops exist because people want the service, ergo it exists.

and there's nothing not hard working about working at a coffee shop. it's a perfectly valid form of employment for people with circumstances you know nothing about.

Screw them. I can get overpriced coffee anywhere - I don't have to spend my money where I know the owners treat their employees like crap.

Curious to see how Park Slope's limo-liberals act on this one. I have a feeling that convenience is going to trump conscience.

People care because workplace bullying, as happened at Gorilla is a serious issue. Read up about it at http://www.workplacebullying.org/.

Work environments like Gorilla have a serious impact on the employees. I would definitely urge people not to work there, and I know I certainly won't be giving them a dime of my money, ever.

  • citizenerased

    I can't believe anyone gives a shit.

  • BillytheKid22

I hope all the regulars boycott Gorilla for treating their employees like shit. I know I'm not going there anymore.

  • thewildpansy

ha, die fa**ot. are you serious? you have no idea about anything, all you know is these spoiled employees don't know what hard work is. you don't know anything.

  • handsomedevil

    ha, die fa**ot

Nah, fuck you. It could be true that the co-owner in question is a bitch on wheels who treats her employees like shit. This dude takes it seriously, anyway, and will act accordingly.

Personally, if I was actually in the joint and caught a whiff of this, it would put me off the place. Happened with Totonno's of Coney Island. (I mean, if you are going to bitch out an employee for no real reason, DON'T do it in front of customers. Duh.)

I'm agnostic about the Gorilla walkout, just because, you know, I don't believe everything I read on the internet.
