Bowery Getting Medians for Chinatown Pedestrian Safety

041310median.jpg Between 2004 and 2008, there were more than 150 accidents resulting in injuries on one stretch of Bowery between East Broadway and Canal Street, and one pedestrian was killed. As part of a Chinatown Traffic Calming Plan, the DOT is currently building three big medians to give pedestrians refuge in the middle of the busy boulevard; the work is expected to be completed before summer.

"We've got thousands of pedestrians that cross this street each and every day and a lot of them are seniors and kids," zealous DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan tells NY1. "We've got P.S. 124, P.S. 131, a lot of schools, a lot of seniors, lot of foot traffic. And so we're going to make it a better street, an easier street to cross, make it clearer to pedestrians where they need to go, and also giving them a refuge if they get trapped crossing the street." As one local resident opines, "There's too much cars, traffic around,"

"thefacts" lives around that area. He's going to have a stroke when he reads that the DOT is doing yet another thing to make things safer for pedestrians and to slow down traffic.

  • Spudster

The problem on those blocks is not the race or gender of pedestrians (thanks, misogynistic racist posters!), but the sheer number of pedestrians and the traffic that hurtles toward the Manhattan Bridge. These medians are a welcome addition.

  • Greenpoint60

BTW it was worse 20-30 yrs ago, the signals turned too fast then.

  • Greenpoint60

I always try to cross at Elizabeth or Mott instead of the Bowery.

@MKenrich - Racism is racsim, no matter your grammar. 150 people killed or injured... what a great excuse to blame the victims. The issue is maniacs in multi-ton vehicles speeding toward free bridges and making illegal u-turns. See, I said that without even mentioning the race of the maniacs.

  • Greenpoint60

This is no suprise, the traffic there reminds me of Shanghai.

  • MKenrich

Whoops! Tons of grammatical errors, just wanted to acknowledge my mistakes before the grammar maniacs get all worked up about it...

  • Potty Boy

I know for a fact a large number of pedestrians at that location ignore the lights.

  • MKenrich

Asian females are up there but I think they come in 3rd behind Hasidic Jews and African American females when it comes to bad driving. They should implement a countdown system for crossing lights if they want to things to effective. The City should study pedestrian traffic systems from other countries.

  • MEDICNYC

I'm starting to see more and more of those countdown systems on the Don't Walk signs all around the City.

  • Greenpoint60

They have coundown boards in China, when it hits 0 you had better be on the pavement or else you become roadkill.

There's a certain cultural thing that I think a lot of us don't get when it comes to Chinese folks driving, walking and riding a bike. Racist ...yeah, whatever. Now that we're over that, seriously. What's the deal?

  • xgeyiph772

Not so much racist as cultural. When driving thru Chinatown I often am amazed at how a majority of people crossing the street will literally jump in front of my car even though I have the light. The jaywalking down here is so much more prevalent then in other n'hoods. Are Chinese folk culturally tuned to go from Point A to Point B in as direct a line as possible? Same thing happens on the subway. Chinese barrel on to the train at Canal St and will knock you over to get a seat. Maybe living in a country with a billion other folks makes one pushy.

  • Potty Boy

Going in a straight line from A to B is efficiency. How else would you travel? Niceties and protocol like crosswalks, etc., are seen as unnecessary obstructions. The principle is as long as no one is harmed, where is the harm? Even with this attitude though, I draw a line. If someone pushes you out of the way to grab a seat, I wouldn't object if you shoved back.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

Pretty much. The Chinese don't put up with shit. If you're too slow and just standing around, they'll push you out of way. Same goes for drivers.

  • Greenpoint60

Go to China to see how crowds and traffic can move, they do excercise in the AM and ride bikes to keep in shape, not like the fatsos here.

  • hotstepper

IMO asians in general are pretty bad drivers.

the only exception is those badass delivery guys riding bicycles and scooters in all kinds of inclement weather including snow -- i give them respect.

  • PathToWisdom

The more than 150 accidents resulting in injuries

    happened because of

Jaywalking by chinese old men and ladies.

Police needs to arrest them, give them a ticket.

    Pull them to court.

    Then the accidents will reduce.
