Representative Anthony Weiner is the subject of an admiring profile in this week's Observer, which begins with a funny account of the congressman's recent appearance at a club packed with twenty-something constituents. Taking the mic in the DJ booth, Weiner cracked wise: "Every single moment that we are stroking our beards and gazing at our navel and thinking about the world we’d like to be and singing ‘Kumbaya’ is another day we’re not punching Bill O’Reilly in the nose." Not stopping there, he proceeded to roast the Tea Party:
"I follow Twitter for the Tea Party and just show up to fuck with them," Weiner said. "No, I don’t do that. I just sit at my desk and they send me talcum powder every couple of weeks." The Observer is just the latest news outlet to write about how Weiner is really hitting his stride as the media's go-to liberal "spitfire." Dana Rubinstein contends, "In a sense, Mr. Weiner has learned from his opponents across the aisle. Say what you will about the right, but it has no shortage of forceful spokespeople—from Glenn Beck to Liz Cheney and her father, Dick, from Sarah Palin to Rush Limbaugh. The Democratic Party? Not so much. Mr. Weiner saw that vacuum. And he filled it."
To what end? Well, Mayor Weiner. of course. He aborted a run for City Hall when Bloomberg took a third term, but he's not giving up, and says he he has no interest in a Senate upgrade. "I’m a New York City guy," Weiner explains. "I kind of view the world like that New Yorker cartoon. The only other job that ever had any interest for me is mayor." Well, that and fashion model scout.
Below, the 2006 video of Weiner that's mentioned in the article; it shows him confronting supporters of an ally's rival on a Park Slope sidewalk:
