Recycling Revamp Proposed

recycle0410.jpg New Yorkers kind of suck at the whole recycling thing, so maybe some changes to the program will help out. The Daily News reports that the City Council is proposing "the largest expansion of the city's recycling program since it began 21 years ago." Under the new plan public recycling bins will be added to sidewalks, bins for donated clothes will be placed around the city, a hazardous material program would be brought in, and more plastics would become a part of curbside recycling. All the changes would hardly cost the city a thing, according to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who says the expanded program will cut the amount of trash the city pays to dump.

That's all well and good, but can we get some CFL recycling?

  • ladyjane

yes! do it! now i won't have to carry plastic containers around in my bag with me until i get home to recycle. i would consider that additional effort, but having a place to put plastics and other recyclables on the street-makes life easier.

+1 for clothing and hazardous bins. My biggest point of guilt is throwing away batteries.

  • Politburo

Household non-rechargeable batteries are not hazardous.

Recycling is about as difficult as tying your shoes.

    Sounds like Germany

    Um, hardly.

They might not cost "the city", as in the municipal gov't, a thing (and I have my doubts on that), but it sure will cost homeowners and other taxpayers plenty in additional effort, time, fees, and penalties.

And even more storage space needed for vermin attractions...

Oh yes, surely. It will cost me so much time to throw my soda can in a recycling bin on the street instead of the garbage can. Plus I am losing my freedom to pollute as written in the Constitution. Socialism! Socialism!

  • Teddie Boy Eddie

Oh no, not additional effort. That 5 minutes I spend each week on recycling is already killing me.
