Do You Brita?

brita0410.jpg Recently NYMag had a lab analyze samples of tap water from 14 locations around the city. While the water checked out (and has passed taste tests in the past), they made a list of some extra goodies that were found in it, including sodium, nitrates, trihalomethanes, iron and manganese, arsenic (!) and calcium carbonate. While the Riverkeeper folks say we can drink our city's tap water with confidence, that whole arsenic thing may have some considering the world of water filtration (the site confirms that "severe weather, the odd rusting pipe, and other conditions" may further contaminate the system). So, do you take your chances, or do you filter your tap?

Late to the party, but another filter option that is more eco-friendly and also more aesthetically pleasing than the Brita is available at Design Within Reach:

shit that you're that paranoid about your water just boil a pitcher's worth, let it cool off, and pour it in the fridge! problem solved. from years of drinking tap water, my body has built an immunity to most hazardous chemicals and diseases.

I was not aware that boiling would remove sodium fluoride, rust, chlorine, and prescription drug residues.

boiling kills bacteria n shit....if you got fucking rusty water then u must distill it yo straight up..matter of fact if u got rusty fucking water thats a bigger problem than brita because most likely if you're drinking that shit you're showering in that shit too....so have fun pre-war building people

Tap water, because I can never remember to change the filter on my Brita. Plus, I like NYC tap water.

I work for a company called ODAK INC. everything that is mentioned in this article is 100% true. We just opened a new location in central N.J. and the average person would be shocked what we find in their water. Our water filter is NSF/ANSI certified to remove 99.9% of contaminants including but not limited to nitrates, trihalomethanes, iron and manganese, and arsenic. To learn more about the things in your water contact me at lkelly@odak.com or look at our website at www.odak.com.

The calcium carbonate is a necessary additive, helping to maintain the thick shells New Yorkers use to insulate themselves from one another.

Just saying, isn't filtering water because it's supposedly polluted just contributing to making more pollution? Those little plastic encased filters don't really go anywhere at the end of the month except a landfill or worst. Of course advertisement tells me it "tastes" better so... I did use to Britasize my water but now just use it to keep my tap water cold. It's evil.

ODAK'S WATER FILTER IS BIO-DEGRADEABLE, THE WHOLE SYSTEM IN COMPLETELY ECO-FRIENDLY.

Steam distilled water and all your problems go away.

that explains the belligerent lunatic behavior of most people in NYC

Brita in each bathroom and in the kitchen. Even my pets get Brita'ed water. I don't shower in Brita water yet (for that I use Poland Springs...).

Unless the orangey-reddish stuff in my water is something different, I believe there's rust in my tap water. Thankfully, I've been filtering my water with a carbon filter (asw well as an extra for fluoride and arsenic) since before I moved here.

Don't worry poor people, when they start taxing the sugared beverages, you can just drink the not so free water. Although the water will no longer contribute to your obesity issues, you may have to worry about cancer, arsenic poisoning and some other odd ills from drinking tap water. But, not to worry, your brand spanking new health plan should kick in by then and all will be well. Unless of course you die before then and if so, too bad for you! Of course all this is assuming that the next Republican Administration doesn't repeal it, in that case too bad for all of us!

  • Mr. Moomin

Do the sugared beverage companies filter the water sucked into their bottling plants?

  • LB

Filtered water ! EST. 12 years now . I've had no problems with my dental visits, or discolored water . It cost and extra penny but it works better then the brita filter . Lasts longer as well, I replace the filter once a year .

  • slappy

I use a Britta. Both to filter the water and to let the chlorine evaporate which happens simply while the water is standing in the pitcher for a few hours.
