Last Night's Action: Season Over

2008_12_rangerslogo.jpg
  • Flyers 2 Rangers 1 (Shootout): Henrik Lundqvist did absolutely everything he could, but he couldn’t help the Rangers’ offense and that made all the difference. Lundqvist made an amazing 46 saves in the game as the Rangers were outshot 47-25. And it looked like Lundqvist would carry the Rangers into the playoffs. Jody Shelley scored three minutes into the game to give New York the lead and that held up into the third period. But, Matt Carle scored to tie the game and Philadelphia managed to slip two by Lundqvist in the shootout to earn the playoff spot.
  • Yankees 7 Tampa 3: The Yankees are 4-2 on the year and have taken series on the road from their two biggest AL East rivals. AJ Burnett went seven innings while allowing only three runs and catcher, Jorge Posada, hit a two-run home run. A-Rod added two RBI’s and the Yankees are now on their way back to New York for the home opener and ring ceremony on Tuesday.
  • Washington 5 Mets 2: It was not a very good week for the Mets. The euphoria of Monday’s opener was replaced with their second-straight series loss this time to the lowly Nationals. To make matters worse, Sunday’s loss was with Johan Santana on the mound for New York and Livan Hernandez on the mound for Washington. Santana dug too big a hole as he gave up a grand slam in the first. Mike Jacobs had the lone highlight for New York, a two-run shot off of Brian Bruney.
  • Miami 111 Knicks 98: Here’s the good news, only two more games remain in the Knicks’ season. David Lee had 26 points, but the defense was atrocious once again allowing Miami to shoot 52% from the field. The curtain comes down on this train wreck Wednesday night.
  • Devils 2 Buffalo 1: New Jersey clinched the second seed in the East with the win and will open the playoffs against the Flyers.

Now that hockey is over and basketball is just about over it's time to constraint on the Mets and Yankees!

Well out of the 5 winter teams only one makes the playoffs and they're not even in New York.

"Philadelphia managed to slip two by Lundqvist in the shootout"??

you must have not watched the game...those two in the shootout did not "slip by" Lundy, they were both Ripped past him! With a capital R!

Glen Sather and John Tortorella should be fired immediately. Clean house already-this team freakin stunk all year.

What about the islanders vs. Penguins game?

The Rangers didn't get to be the joke of the Original Six by being good or well run. Yet another season thrown away in the purgatory of ninth place. They may have been around for 84+ years, but most of those years have been bad.

The only way to see any bright side in this is that now the Rangers will have a top ten pick in the draft, and they'll have deprived an utterly terrible team owner of millions of dollars in playoff revenue.

When you come right down to it, the difference this season was their play at home. Their being just barely over .500 at Madison Square Garden is what kept them out of the playoffs. There were too many games that I left the Garden as a season ticket holder thinking to myself that the effort just wasn't there. Effort and talent.

The Rangers have guys like Dubinsky, Callahan, and Prospal who play their asses off every night but who suffer from a low-ish ceiling in actual hockey talent. And then there are the Drury, Gaborik, Redden, and Rozsival players who seem to turn it on and off when they want to. Poor Henrik Lundqvist, by far the best player on a team that doesn't care. Trade him to a team that can actually win, to a team that actually knows where it comes from, to a team that cares enough to play for the Stanley Cup instead of that fat cocaine-flecked paycheck.

Also, I might add, I was really hoping they wouldn't make the playoffs, so that the upper management feels it. This was not their year, so better off for everyone they didn't make the push for the cup.

I agree with you. But, it's not the team that doesn't care. Like you said, they play their hearts out every night (well, most of them). But even though they have heart, they aren't the most talented team, and that starts at the top. Combine that with a coach that isn't connecting with his team, who's idea of unifying the team is making them take bus trips and stay overnight together when they play the Islanders and Devils, and you get a big sack of sorry shit. Even though I am and always have been a huge fan, I could never buy season tickets. Sather needs to go (before Tortorella even) and I'm voting with my dollars.
