Jury Selection Begins In Fatal Brooklyn Hate Crime

2010_04_jsuc.jpg Jury selection starts today for the trial of Hakim Scott and Keith Phoenix, who are accused of fatally beating Jose Sucuzhanay in Brooklyn last year. Police say Scott and Phoenix beat Sucuzhanay (pictured), an Ecuadorian immigrant who owned a real estate agency, because they thought he was gay (anti-gay and anti-Hispanic epithets were allegedly yelled), when he was really just tipsy and walking arm-in-arm with his brother. Cops also say Phoenix confessed ("So I killed someone—that makes me a bad guy?"), claiming self-defense. Scott recently turned down a plea deal for 18 years, insisting, "I didn't kill nobody."

First off I feel that everyone's comments are ignorant and biased! As for Craig no they can't see who out of the two did it, it isn't so obvious.... The only thing that is obvious is that Scott initiated the whole incident. If he would have never gotten out and started an altercation with them none of this would have happened in the first place! There are always many sides to a story but the only version that matters is the truth! None of us can say what actually happened that night because we were not there, we need to stop painting the picture as if the victims were so innocent because honestly we do not know that. I am not condoning the actions that occurred that night, I am simply saying that we need to stop being so quick to take everything that is said in the media to be accurate because majority of the time it is exaggerated!

This story really, really bothers me. I hope these scumbags never see the light of day for what they did.

I need input from a lawyer: Is "I didn't kill nobody" considered an admissible confession?

  • newport27

a man walking arm-in-arm with his brother after a drink gets killed for looking "gay". mainstream culture in america is just unbelievable

  • jibbly

I sincerely hope that these two scumbags are far, far removed from mainstream culture.

"So I killed someone—that makes me a bad guy?"

No, you're confusing cause and effect. The fact that you're a bad guy is why you killed someone, not the other way around.
