DUMBO Locals Protest Pretty Carousel

Jane Walentas (hitched to developer David Walentas) has been fighting to bring her antique carousel into Empire Fulton Ferry Park, which is currently closed off as it faces a merger with the new Brooklyn Bridge Park. She's happy to pay for the installation, so who doesn't want a free pretty carousel sprucing up area filled with modern day metallic orbs that burn children? The people leaving these flyers around, that's who. Curbed spotted and transcribed the opponent's posted protest, which reads in part:
The Carousel: Boycott this thoughtless project of a rich individual's boredom. In order to install the carousel in the park...
  • A majestic tree will be chopped down
  • Nature all around will be destroyed
  • As will the peace and quiet we've enjoyed
  • No more geese - either chased or terrified by the racket and the crowds
The scaremongerers also note that the presence of the carousel will turn the area into a mini amusement park, attracting junk food, annoying crowds of people, and rats! Carousels, dancing... what will the heathens bring to DUMBO next?

The story just can't be much worse for the people of Youngstown, Ohio and anyone who remembers Idora Park. This is the last significant thing left and now you don't really want it.

New York sucks. By the way, plenty of nice artist space available in Youngstown. Nice people, nice mayor, real artists wanted.

I wouldn't mind the carousel as long as the geese can ride on it.

Having met Mrs. Walentas a couple times a while back, I'm pretty sure this project is the result of Mr. Walentas writing a blank check just to keep her away from him.

Also, I agree...putting that carousel in the park would be a disaster.

By all means, put in a carousel, a Shake Shack , and a McDonald's Express while you are at it. NYC Parks should generate lots of money. Taxpayers get these parks for free, don't we? We don't need passive park space to just chill out in. That's what parks are for. Oh, wait a minute...

The geese are scared of carousels? What, were they polled? Can someone speak goose?

  • Knickerbocker

Trees? Nature? We are talking about DUMBO, right?

Overpriced condos in an industrial dumping ground and you are worried about geese.

You live under a bridge which rains rust on your head 24/7, surrounded by the BQE offramps spewing CO2 and there is a huge electrical substation just 500 yards away.

    Yea, save the tree.....

  • For! The! Win!

Carousels scare off the geese? Can we just surround the entire city with them then? Do they work on pigeons too?

  • Politburo

No more geese? Sign me up.

Who thought that one was a negative?

while the nature conservancy crap is boring, the concerns over crowds of snotty children and wastelands of hot dog plates are pretty valid.
