Conan Makes Move To TBS

conantbs.jpg Conan O'Brien just Tweeted some big news, announcing: "The good news: I will be doing a show on TBS starting in November! The bad news: I'll be playing Rudy on the all new Cosby Show."

Fox was rumored to be the main contender in picking up the late night talk show host, and reportedly he only started talking to TBS just last week. In a statement O'Brien declared: ''In three months, I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly.'

The show will debut in November, airing Monday through Thursday each week at 11 p.m. EST—meaning his move to the network will relocate George Lopez's show to midnight. Lopez is being a good sport, and said, "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in. It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy." But WWMWD?

Bad move Conan - Should have made a deal with Fox..They have got the network in place already....What they have now is the Office and Seinfeld reruns which do big business in syndication....And yes despite the slant of Fox News (like that has anything to do with this discussion)..the Fox Network is pretty powerful...I'm talking Simpsons and Family Guy so they are not all bad...

To be fair a fox executive wouldn't know good programming if it hit him upside the head. Fox canceled Family Guy and Futurama only for Adult Swim and the DVD sales to resurrect it from the grave. They made the same mistake again with King of the Hill recently which is also getting a positive upswing on Adult Swim. Not to mention all of the failed series over the years, putting Dollhouse and Sarah Connor Chronicles on fridays, replacing American Dad with Sons of Tucson for a month out of the blue, giving Wanda Sykes two different shows, and then making her saturday night late night show only record 12 episodes (getting smothered by SNL in result thanks to the network not being able to play anything but reruns until the fall), putting Ellen on as a judge in American Idol, etc.

When fox gets a big show its because they got lucky, not because Newscorp is good at running network television. Lord knows they're screwed in the fall now that 24 is leaving the building, and American Idol is all but dead without Simon. They still have a good glut of Dramas though and fox dramas always tend to do well regardless of time placement (except on killslot times like Fridays)

Fox has produced some of the most brilliant comedy shows of all time, so I'd say it's more than luck. Yeah, a lot of the shows they try suck, but relative to other networks they've been pretty successful.

OK you got me but I'm fairly certain that Conan would have a chance for a decent sized nightly audience on Fox. Other than this Lopez guy does anyone tune in to TBS?

  • matty

I agree power hugs. I mean, fox used to be a kind of comedy incubator. If not that, it was at least the king of comedy syndications. i watched more seinfeld on fox than nbc...

Who the hell watches TBS? He's going to get murdered by the Daily Show and the Colbert Report at that time slot.

  • Wza

    Should've went to HBO.

    Good luck to him though.

George Lopez show is not that bad.

  • NannyState

I agree but the big drawback to HBO is that he couldn't easily return to network TV. TBS keeps that option WIDE open.

    TBS

    hahahahahahah

  • jibbly

Nice. Is he staying in LA or coming back to NYC or ___?!

  • inoyourider

I hope he comes back to NYC it would be soooo good for NYC to get another show.

  • NannyState

He put his luxe condo in LA on the market if that tells you something. TBS is wholly owned by TimeWarner so a New York studio only makes sense.

  • longacre

I hope they do the show in that crummy Atlanta shopping mall CNN uses for some shows.

  • Matt

TBS quickly put together this video promo for the show:

  • He's going to get pre-empted by baseball games that run over!

  • mellow_fellow

I may be looking in the wrong place, but according to this, TBS has baseball only on Sundays. The Braves' TV schedule on MLB.com jibes with this.

  • xgeyiph772

We can only hope. Go Braves!

  • Krooklyn

    BOOOOOOOO!

  • valeriob

TBS is very funny. Where does Conan fit in?

  • paulie

Where's the Team George Lopez rally?
