7-Alarm Chinatown Fire: At Least 32 Injured, 200 Homeless
Just after 10 p.m. last night, firefighters were called to a fire at a six-story building at 285 Grand Street in Manhattan's Chinatown. The blaze grew into a 7-alarm fire, which brought over 250 firefighters and took until 2 a.m. to bring under control, and spread to other buildings. At least 32 people were injured—three civilians and 29 firefighters— were injured and at least 200 are homeless.
According to the NY Times, "Flames burst 20 to 30 feet from the roof. Three ladders had been put up against the building, and a few dozen firefighters waited to be sent in, five at a time. Hundreds of people stopped to watch the blaze on the cool spring night." WABC 7 reports that firefighters rescued people from fire escapes and "Three tenants were seriously injured. Two elderly residents were in critical condition, while the third was serious."
The co-owner of one of the buildings told the Post, "The tenants on the sixth floor ran downstairs and told us to get the hell out." And a tenant said, "I heard fire trucks and smelled smoke so I got my roommate and we evacuated. When the firefighters smashed open the second floor windows, flames came bursting out. We thought they had it under control at that point until the flames came out of the roof."

Not surprising how a couple of walkups could make 200 chinamen homeless.

or another hotel, it's far enough from the Grand street station but not far enough from the natives which the new people are afraid of. I was surprised how many Chinese businesses are there when I went to google view. they crossed the SDR park line.

That's what happens when you just stay in Greenpoint. You have no idea what's going on in other neighborhoods. Chinatown and its surrounding streets are gentrifying very quickly. That's why residents and neighborhood activists were pushing hard for historic district status in order to preserve the older buildings and the generally low-rise feel of the area.

This is ridiculous, you are not going to squeeze the Chinese out because they have $$$, money talks in NY BS walks.
BTW this is my old neighborhood, I know it like the back of my hand.

No, a real hotel. and no firecrackers, too.
there's 2 hotels almost done, the old Music Palace theatre and one on Mulberry across from Columbus park.
if you know of a hotel run by mama san, tell me. though one can sort of figure it out in the old days, when you see a brightly lit doorway with a security cam overhead.
the only brightly lit doorway in the block.
I remember when the only hotel in Chinatown was the Pacifica aka holiday inn. I'm glad it's doing well, of course, it's mostly europeans who stay there. it offends middle amurica.

Twenty five years ago this area was mostly Puerto Rican, fifty years ago Jewish. Today its Chinese, who will be next?

The fire travelled up an air shaft in the original building, and once it got to the top floor, it travelled through the cockloft (area between the roof and the ceiling). It want to the two buildings on the left of the original building.

reminds me of last year's blaze which wiped out the buildings on east broadway, and which was suspiciously torn day within a matter of days. even more suspicious was that the building next to it was also deemed unfit to stand. no report was ever made of the source, which i would venture to guess was ARSON. maybe the "inspectors" in this case will do a better job. but they probably won't, because this is prime property which could be better off torn down just like the one on east broadway to build a new lux building. landlord wins with insurance money and doesn't have to rent out his place for pennies, inspectors win with some dirty money under the table after reporting their "inspection". the only losers are the "nobodies" who live there and are now homeless. business as usual.

Bingo!

Wow over 200 homeless? That's like 6 apartments worth.
I kid, I kid! Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

I went by there around 9am today. Still smokey and the whole neighborhood just reaked of burning. I wonder how it got so big?
