Sad Opossum Spotted In The Bronx

Is 2010 the year nature takes back New York? So far we've seen rabid raccoons, wild coyotes (like, everywhere), seals, dolphins and bald eagles. In comparison to last year, when we pretty much just had sad rat and Sad Panda... this is quite an upswing in animal activity. And let's not forget our latest urban explorer: opossums! The marsupials were recently terrorizing Brooklyn, and now it seems they've made it to the Bronx. Well, almost made it. A reader sent us the above photo this morning, taken at 161st Street near River Avenue... we like to think he's just playing possum.

I have lived in the northeast Bronx for 50 years and over the past year have come across a possum multiple times in my backyard. Last week I had one come right up to my back door and just yesterday my brother found a dead one in my mothers yard - a block away from my house.

So they are definitely residents of the Bronx.

No one wants to be greeted with a photo of a dead possum. And for the record, possums are all over the Bronx (it IS part of the mainland, you know) and Staten Island.
