Granny Shooter May Claim Insanity

81-year-old Maria Cartagena may be readying an insanity defense, after shooting Latin jazz king Eddie Palmieri's wife last month. The granny drew a gun from her fanny pack, said "Move over or I'm gonna kill ya," and shot at her target... but only grazed her head. She later claimed Iraida Palmieri had been armed with scissors. Cartagena didn't show up to her day in court yesterday, and according to the Daily News, her lawyer Michael Mays said she was in the hospital seeking psychiatric treatment. He also added that there had been threats "or some physical altercation" which made her fear for her safety. In the past her husband said that noise coming from the Palmieri's above their apartment put his wife "on the brink of a nervous breakdown."

As living in a building not far from this person, I can honestly say without a doubt that the insanity plea here is not a defense and will lose in a court of law especially if I was on a jury.

Attacking his wife was a CONSCIOUS ACT. It was not insanity. She even said with her own words she complained over noise issues and appeared without cuffs in an interview to a newspaper.

I heard she was in rikers for evaluation, and no $25,000 bond was posted. Then she skips here 2nd court date and the attorney alleges she checked herself into a mental institution.

I can't believe a judge wouldn't force a bond to be posted here and this women isn't behind bars already.

As a citizen of this community I am outraged at the total process of the american system of jurisprudence of this matter and I will make my opinions known in the next elections and vote all the appropriate parties responsible out of office so that we have a strict and coherent judicial system for criminals. Nowadays Queens is a breeding ground of corruption over and over again. From the local level to the State level, it is one bag of corruption which needs to be weeded out and cleaned up.

Also we need a true clearer interpretation that SCOTUS has to hand down regarding Mcdonald Vs Chicago as the case was on the docket in March 2010 and a final verdict needs to be issued. NYC is just wrong on gun control and any attempt to interfere should a favorable verdict be rendered would be unconstitutional.
