Williamsburg Walks Gets Reduced To One Weekend

Williamsburg: of the six Saturdays that were scheduled, you are only getting one weekend for your pedestrian plaza this summer. The good news is, there's someone to direct your anger towards! According to FreeWilliamsburg, A & G Merch's Jill Goldhand is the leader of the movement that took down fest—in fact, she recently told the Brooklyn Paper: "Thank God they’ve cut it."

Goldhand, as well as other merchants on the strip, complained they lost sales during the Williamsburg Walks events, which typically shuts down a stretch of Bedford Avenue for a few summer Saturdays. Will sales pick up again this year or do people in the area just not care that much about $450 chandeliers? Time will tell!

Meanwhile, organizers at Neighbors Allied for Good Growth say this year's event will take place on June 26 and 27th—and they're "confident [it] will be fantastic and we will establish a sustainable model for the years to come." If not, then you can look forward to future summers of driving your car over to the new Starbucks.

    Hello,

Williamsburg Walks is organizing a brainstorming session to solicit your ideas on how to make the event fun, memorable, and fulfilling. This is a chance for you to get your questions answered, to share your suggestions and to support the event in general.

At the session, the organizers will update the group on our latest progress planning the event and conduct a brainstorming session about the kind of programming the community would like to see happen on their street. The session will take place on Wednesday April 21st from 6 to 8 pm at Teddy’s Bar & Grill, 96 Berry Street (corner of N8th Street) in Williamsburg.

This year Williamsburg Walks is organized by Neighbors Allied for Good Growth and the L Magazine with the support of Project for the Public Spaces. The event is happening on Saturday June 26th and Sunday June 27th on a car-free Bedford Avenue (N4th St. to N9th St.). This new format is in response to opinions expressed by groups in the community and comes from a desire by the organizers to find an inclusive and sustainable model for the years to come.

This is an event by the community for the community at which we want people to go ‘woaa, I did not know you could do that on the street’. Together, we will create a place where everyone can relax or shop and think all the while.

The position of Jumelle has been wrongly presented in recent articles about Williamsburg Walks. We have contaced the staff writer with our concerns as some of the quotes were entirely fabricated.

Jumelle has been an active participant in the community for over four years and we simply wish to set the record straight.

    Word!

Another community victory against DOT, the nerds at Public Space, TransAlt, and the day-glo tank top crowd who have infested it of late.

  • SikBug

So retarded. So did any of the stores that are actually on the road that gets closed off complain? I'll try to remember to yell fuck you every time I pass on my way to Tops.

I think williamsburg walks are a great stepping stone to making Bedford Ave a pedestrian thoroughfare.

The sidewalks along that strip are tiny, tiny and there are two rows of street parking a street that is congested. Make that shit car-free.

Please, Williamsburg Walks is the one of the most ridiculous things that neighborhood has come up with. It serves absolutely no purpose other than to allow all of the crap people are selling on the sidewalks to be moved to the streets. It's about time they did away with that nonsense. You want to walk aimlessly in the middle of the street? Then go find yourself a NYC street fair to wander through.

A&G Merch is a block away from Williamsburg Walks. This is incredibly ridiculous.

I definitely won't be shopping at Jumelle anymore. How on Earth could a community pedestrian event hurt sales? It doesn't make any sense. Maybe they forgot that there was a recession going on last year.

I'd rather shop at any of the 5 other stores on that block that sell the same stuff as Jumelle anyways. At least they aren't anti-community.

  • tvroom

you call that a community? Neighborhood is nothing more than a bunch of transients with day glow tank tops and bikes they can barely ride.

So the stores I will no longer patronize are:

    Jumelle

    A&G Merch

    Thanks!

    x3 and growing.

Take that Jill; your wonderful plan is helping you lose customers already.
