Hidden Courtyard In Hell's Kitchen

Your real estate jealousy meter is about to be turned up to 11... ScoutingNY recently spotted a small alley on West 46th Street, and lucky for us, he had no problem finding a way through the gate closing it off from the rest of Hell's Kitchen.

Located at 420 and 422 1/2 West 46th Street, the gate identifies the area as Clinton Court, and the Scout explains: "The carriage house is a completely separate residence from the surrounding apartment buildings" (which shares the courtyard pictured). "This carriage house was built pre-1800 and is the only surviving building in the area dating back to when Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen were farmland." It's also one of the most haunted buildings in New York, with at least three women jumping to their deaths from the roof! Maybe that's why apartments in the court are only going for a little over $300K?

Still, Sotheby's real estate page points out Clinton Court provides its residents with "a serene courtyard with climbing ivy, slate stonework, and French Quarter ambiance"—which is worth suffering through a few ghosts, right? More interior and exterior photos to feed your inner-hermit can be found at Scouting and Corcoran. Swoon.

In the realtor's ad it describes the property as "pre-war". Which war was it?

    1812.

I think you're right. It was built in 1811 by slaves imported from the south as strike breakers.

I walk by Clinton Court every day on my way to work... I always thought it was nice, but I never had a clue that it was this nice. It's also right near The Piano Factory, which is another beautiful building with a courtyard... apartments there don't last long either. I'll just keep dreaming, I guess...

Nothing says luxury like sitting in a 10x10 courtyard staring up at a sliver of sky in the noisiest part of the city. Wish I had $300k to burn. Courtyard is probably 2x the size of the apt itself.

That's actually a pretty quiet block.

I think you need glasses. That top picture clearly shows it's a little bigger than 10x10.

I think it's nice. Very European feel. Not that I'd want to live there myself even if I had the cash to burn, but it does show some good taste, which is more than I can say for ferryboi.

    The apartment is now sold.

can we get a gothamist post on the scaling back of the (really enjoyable) Williasmburg Walks program? http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/archives/2010/04/bedford_ave_bus.html

I would love to see gothamist readers tear this bitch apart. no one buys her unimaginative, overpriced stuffs and she kills the chances of ever turning Bedford Ave into a somewhat permanent pedestrian mall
