David Wright's home run trot in mid-season form. (AP/Kathy Willens) The Mets started their season right this afternoon with a commanding 7-1 victory over the Florida Marlins at Citi Field. Although he had an unimpressive spring, coming off of arthroscopic surgery, ace Johan Santana pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run and four hits. Fernando Nieve pitched two scoreless innings of relief, and K-Rod finished it with a 1-2-3 9th (with no save situation).
Despite missing stars Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy, the ramshackle opening day line-up produced some big hits, including a two-run homer from David Wright in the first inning (a good omen for the season despite Wright hitting Citi Field's first home run last season), along with two hits from new slugger Jason Bay (a triple to boot!), and two RBI's from Jeff Francouer. The Mets also took advantage of three errors from the Marlins.
