New York Top City for Facebook

040510facebookgraph.jpg Facebook's official statistics leave a lot to be desired. Sure there are 400 million active users, but where are they? In an attempt to answer that question, Mashable came out with this handy infographic that comes close to pinpointing your every obsessive move. So what does it say about New York? We're #1, sort of! Like.

Though the state slips behind South Dakota as the state with the highest percentage of Facebook accounts, the city has nearly 3.5 million Facebook users, more than any other city. Philadelphia has the highest percentage of Facebook users in the city, with almost all of their 1.5 million residents having an active account. It also looks like the social networking site isn't very popular in the southwest. New Mexico has the lowest percentage of users at 10.3%, and Phoenix has the lowest percentage of users out of any city. Nobody on Facebook was available for comment on New York's victory, as they were too busy buying seeds on Farmville.

I saw "View From A Bridge" this past weekend, and during the performance this guy was on his Blackberry, updating his damned Facebook page.

It would be one thing if you were at Guys and Dolls, but View From a Bridge is UNreal!

Every Gothamist post should end with a terrible Weekend Update punchline.

The DC number is greater than 100% because of the disproportionate amount of people who technically reside elsewhere but live in DC, and it would include people in surrounding cities who claim to live in DC on their profiles.

Hence why Philadelphia and Dallas appear to have nearly 100% of their populations on Facebook (which is impossible).

I wonder if New York is affected by people saying they live in one of the boroughs, rather than "New York City"

Per capita Chicago is the highest user according to that chart. NYC, is like 2nd lowest.

That is an amazing graphic. I took the data and ran some comparative analysis. It took a lot of time, but I did identify a very subtle trend:

Cities with the larger population tend to have more people using facebook than cites with smaller populations.

    Total "no sh!t, Sherlock" chart

It truly is amazing. Thanks Jaya for opening our eyes. Please continue keeping Gothamist readers apprised of all the latest press releases coming from Rick Romero University, Department of Research into the Blindingly Obvious.

I hope their research into the 'water is wet' theory yields results which are just as fruitful.

  • REALITY CHECK

Actually, the chart shows that New Yorkers use Facebook considerably *less* than other comparably large cities.

When I clicked the infographic link, I noticed Facebook has a graph of distribution by race and ethnicity (white, black, latino, asian). The puzzling thing is, Facebook has no option that I could find where a user fills out his or her ethnicity. Makes you wonder.

What a surprise, NYC has the most vapid, self interested populace...I thought LA had that one in the bag
