Dog Fight: Coyote Kills Poodle

phpBnVdvEAM.jpg Coyotes, this isn't going to look good for you. One of the wild animals killed a pet poodle in Rye this week, just about 20 miles outside of the city. According to MyFox5, the poodle was tied up outside a retirement home Wednesday night. A witness called the police to report the attack, but when the authorities arrived, they found only the lifeless dog's carcass. The coyote was seen running off... perhaps towards the city? We're expected to see a coyote boom here sometime around this fall, and a few brave ones have already gone urban this year. It's worth noting that our recent visitors have also attacked humans; late last year a Canadian singer/songwriter was killed by coyotes in Nova Scotia.

For those Gothamist readers who can't be bothered to click on the links:

 If you encounter a coyote, be aggressive. Loud noises and forceful behavior will normally scare the animal away. Wave your arms and throw sticks or stones.

     Do not feed coyotes.

 Do not provide food sources that may attract them, such as outdoor pet food or bird seed. They may be attracted by the birds and rodents drawn to bird feeders.

     Make garbage inaccessible.

 Do not allow pets to run free. Coyotes can see cats or small dogs as prey (coyotes’ average weight is 35 pounds; they will usually yield their territory to mid-sized or larger dogs). Conflicts are most frequent in March and April, when coyotes are establishing their dens.

 Small children (and pets) should be supervised by an adult while outdoors.

Extensive article in the latest issue of Outside magazine about the differences between Eastern coyotes and the Western brand:

    http://outside.away.com/outside/culture/201003/coyote-attacks-1.html

It seems the Eastern version may have interbred with wolves at some point, and are a bit more aggressive and pack-like than their Western counterparts.

There are only two recorded human deaths by Coyote in US history, 1980 and 2009. However, there have been over 95 human deaths from dog attacks since '97. Let's not make a big deal over this and leave the Coyotes alone please.

...lunch....or should we say a light snack,

Nature is seeking a balance, it seems as if the population of our brother/sister coyote are pro-creating at a level that would require more rodents, or it may be the city is field testing a cheaper form of rodent control...needless to say that lap dog you own provides for an easy meal...

Where my dobermen, shepherd and bull owners at? One bite from these feral canine cousins could mean the big sleep as the State Health Dept would require ya dog to be destroyed in case of a bite, ya know rabies and all...

Well that being said having a pack is the best anti-coyote protection, ask the havisupi nation of native peoples in the grand canyon, they keep "res" dogs around to keep the little thieves from stealing away the youth in the coming of night......
