Downtown Brooklynites Fear Pretentious Takeover

renderingdobro.jpg Downtown Brooklyn isn't only getting a Barneys, a Trader Joe's and an Urban Outfitters... it's also getting a more artistic mark of gentrification: public art. The Daily News reports that there are plans to turn an old parking lot at Hoyt and Schermerhorn Streets (rendering at right), into an art-themed park, covering up eyesores with installations. But not everyone is happy (of course)—some longtime merchants in the area are reportedly feeling squeezed out. One small business owner said, "Eventually there'll be no small stores left. They're making it harder and harder to operate a business." And about that Barneys moving in? One local said, "When I think Barneys, I think of SoHo and Chelsea and all that pretension. That's one of the things I like about living in Brooklyn, it's not pretentious." Yet!

"When I think Barneys, I think of SoHo and Chelsea and all that pretension."

When I think of you, I think of someone who doesn't know where the hell Barneys is.

Next thing you know, they'll try calling the area "DoBro"....oh wait!

Brooklyn is the mecca for transplant dbags who wish they lived in Manhattan but can't afford it. And annoying mommies.

The New York Observer is really hoping that Downtown Brooklyn is the New Williamsburg? http://nyctheblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/is-downtown-brooklyn-new-williamsburg.html

"That's one of the things I like about living in Brooklyn, it's not pretentious."

Really. That's the understatement of the century.

i was making a joke but, unfortunately, ive been to nebraska a few times and can sadly report that their proud culinary culture is anchored in garbage food. seriously.

Insert angry comment about "hipsters" and/or "yuppies" from another part of the country that's not NYC and to which said person has never been to. Then find a way to apply it to topic at hand.

Trader Joe's does not fit the 'pretentious' label. Name one person who is unhappy that we finally have a Trader Joe's and all the yummy stuff you can buy there that you used to have to go to some aunt or grandmother's house for previously.

My only complaint with TJ's and their ilk is that they do make it hard for nearby specialized shops to compete. Not impossible, but hard, since often a specialty store needs customers reliably buying the basic stuff that people can get at TJ's a little cheaper to support their ability to find and sell the really interesting food that TJ's won't.

"stuff you can buy there that you used to have to go to some aunt or grandmother's house for previously.

exactly you doofus.. people like those aunts and grandmothers know that you can get all that stuff all around new york without needing for it to be packaged in an aestherically pleasing box that took a team of marketers months to design so that clueless idiots could pay 4 times the actual value of the product and come away feeling 'in the know' about something that existed when they were still eating kool-aid pops back in the trailer in nebraska

from the same people that bring us mochachailolz, "ista" everythings and ready-made fauxlifestyles at marked up prices

Trader Joes is great, but people are annoyed yuppies & hipsters keep going gaga over the place the same way they do with apple products.

  • glen glenn

Those people should probably get a life.

  • dogbraincatscan

People who also go gaga for Trader Joes: those who want to eat decent, healthy food for regular grocery store prices, because they can't afford co-ops, farmer's markets, or Whole Foods

As long as they don't touch the White Castle on Willoughby

i agree with the small business owner! we can't afford to lose even one of then 18 stores in downtown brooklyn that strictly cater to the dominican tween wearing garish purple sneakers market.

Is this headline from 10 years ago?

    haha. funny.

  • justthinkin

Barney's is 10 years out of date. If I'm not mistaken, the original Barney actually came from Brooklyn, so there's the whole circle-of-life thing gong for this, but, hey, this is Brooklyn. Can't we do better than bowing down to some retailer defining our needs?
